I buy the Vogue/Harpers Bazaar's for the pretty pitcha's but I'm sometimes surprised by the eloquence of the articles.

I think there's a mag called Frankie (or something similar) that has some very talented writers. Sometimes. Not a 100% safe bet but give it a go.

- Yen is the worst magazine ever, utter boring shit and a awful big up feminism slant that is offset by contradictory articles and advertising.

- Wallpaper is spastic, enough with the 'euro' design specials from what looks to be last century.

- ATM is so bad its worth hiding in the store so it sint inflicted on anyone.

- SneakerFreaker is fuckign crap, and is the magainze i blame for the rise of people describing themselves as so called 'sneakerfreakers'.

-3D world - absolute shit, alot like computer music. Once you ahve bought one issue you basically never need to buy it again, as ever issue is the same. Except for some of teh cover CD stuff.

ok hating over.....huhuhu

Source is good for finding out about the latest 'beef' between Lil Wayne and Clipse.

New Weekly - Will never be replaced by Famous, Famous show nipple but it looks spacker. Lots of Kate and Pete stories.

Architectural Review (british version) excellent quality magazine with themed issues full of relevant new architecture.

Cat Lovers UK - mad pics of cats in shows and at home, decent interviews and smells liek a good magazine should.

Another Magazine - Full of heaps of good stuff. Mostly Kate Moss and otehr assorted skinny darkies.

ID - A must to keep up on teh newest UK /music/urban/fashion crossover breakthrough. (:teef:) Always guaranteed features on Wiley, Dizzee, Murkleman? Lily Allen and heaps of otehr wankers.

Scratch - Allright- not great hiphop magaizne focusing on producers not mcs for a change.

umm there are heaps more.

Love that mag. For reasons already mentioned.

Can't believe nobody's played the low-brow card and mentioned "men's" mag's...

And no, I'm not going to.

Dirt - think it might be defunct now not sure, but mad mountain biking magazine that was the first to use skate mag style photography and apply it to the world of dirt jumping and downhilling, always great interviews, focus on nice boutique and drool worthy gravity sleds, a little UK centric though. If I was over riding I only ever had to read that mad and it would instantly get me off the couch and back out riding.

there are some decently written articles though - its not like a socilaist rant, despite peoples misconceptions.

some good research and critisism of our welfare and environmental systems for example

MountainBike magazine is great as well, really nice photos and more focus on trail riding etc rather than racing, makes me want to go riding in middle america and vancouver. Unfortunately Australian Mountainbike is weak really.

Also the Big Issue is really shit, i bought it twice then never again. I feel like stabbing teh bastards who yell out 'gte your big issue etc etc' and then sing to differentiate themselves from other spruikers.

Id be more inclined to buy it if they didnt yell out shit all teh time. I dont get yelled at in the newsagents?

Ease up mate. They're homeless people.

Unless they're being proactive rather than hounding you for 40c to call their parents/partner etc.

agreed. all the aussie mountain bike magazines are ghey, except for freewheel which occasionally gets it right.

agreed MountainBike is great on the photo front. Their photo annual is always mad. Also like their focus away from racing too.

Mountain Bike Action is prob the worst american mad, its one big ad.

Jude Law?? Are you sure it was a Big Issue??

I've always loved BI for it's political satire and stories about the vendors and people who work their asses off to make a difference in Melbourne. Respect to it.

DJ Gem used to work for them, remember visiting her at the Lonsdale St office.

they changed thier paper stock about a year or two ago so its glossier, but not as glossy as the goss mags

it has celebrity articles every one in two or three maybe, but is like the tiniest proportion of the content, (and the cover pics help to sell the magazine...)

SUMMERWINTER

I flicked through the AUS Indesign mag today, it was just REALLY boring.
I usually look for quarterly or yearly publications as i know they have a lot more effort put into them.

drew, as for EMPTY, i dunno i never really got into it, i think DesignIsKinky is a bit....naff ?

whats the UK published designmag, that costs like $25bones for an issue, its an outrage and generally only worth a flick through.

waaaay too left wing for me......

I consider myself (somewhat) left wing in my views, but I think it's embarrassingly too far on one side, cynical, not thoughtful or constructuve IMO..... erky mag.

geez i get that from some articles but as a regular reader i wouldnt on the whole describe it so negatively.

there is some good journalism in there, but there is a bit of shit too...

but compared to most newspapers it dont fair too badly. if you want to see an unbalanced ideological beatup there is always the australian

i also like the vendor profiles, insighful. and weldon, and the weekly quotes - and especially the media review page, some really interseting stuff

the new editor has been good too, i think standards in the writing have improved.

you actually use a turntable to play blues music backwards, and you end up selling all your big issues and making heaps of money, you get a new girlfriend, and your dog comes back to life.

yeah man, i hear you on that one, the whole possie of design is kinky is a bit yeah...

but i just rate most of the magazine design... like in 'move ment' just really rate some of their deisgn work in that regard.... and empty usually has some good articals.... like in issue 7 there was a really good book design artical...

The Sciences.

It was published by the New York Academy of Sciences and works of art used to illustrate the pages rather than graphs and cg images of molecules.

It is no longer in print.
