after checking the relevant legislation in nsw (which is extremely similar to that for victoria), they can do it if you're notified. this notification could occur in your employment contract though.

yes it is! i even checked this with the IT guys here and they said they have to ask permission every time, or they are in HEAPS of trouble.

anyhoo, you IT nerds just need to check the logs and then the person is busted anyways.
Not true at all. It may well be workplace policy to have to ask permission
but I'm not legally restricted in anyway to whom I monitor on the network.

In fact I reckon if you check over your company's electronic use policy
you will find that they own ANY data on their computer/network and that
extends to email.

Even if you are accessing sites that are not work related on your break at
your work PC (we have a spare one in a break room we allow users to
use for personal stuff during break etc. that is NOT monitored) or external
personal email it's all fair game.

Having painted that very bleak picture none of my co-workers have the
time or motive to monitor anyone. I have better things to do that watch
other people watch porn.

Nice one Sys, i thought permission was needed, even if via an employment contract. the user still needs to be made aware.
