ZOMG, I've just started coming to terms with the awesomeness of 6!

improved devices with side-chaining capability
time signature changes
built in audio spectrum analyzer
multiple automation lanes
tempo nudge feature

Sounds like some pretty sweet changes. Not as dramatic as the ones introduced in 6 (deep freeze + racks, where were you all my life?!), but still very cool. I *love* that the Ableton development team really listens to what people want and get it in there for the next version. If only the same could be said for Cubase...

Live 7 available now.

Just downloaded my free upgrade from Ableton's website. Haven't gotten fully under the hood yet, but so far so good. The options for Rex files are nuts.

I don't know. But my guess is :

Officially: No (same specs required on back of the box)

Unofficially: Heck yes. If it's anything like protools 7 it could be a lot hungrier !

Hmmm... creating your own Macros in the drum rack isn't terribly easy. Perhaps there's a way I haven't figured out yet.

One of the most useful features of Live 7 I've discovered that they didn't advertise - improvements to the solo function! Most of my tracks have quite a lot of routings (eg. drums all go through one drums bus, a few synths go through a sidechain bus etc), and if I wanted to hear say the kick drum I'd have to solo the kick AND solo the drums bus, otherwise it wouldn't come through. Now they've made it so if you solo a track, it automatically solos the necessary buses internally, even though they appear muted. A+, that's saved me so much hassle!

I haven't noticed the multiple lanes of automation working yet - in the screenshots I saw if you had two parameters automated, say volume + pan, if you opened up the track in the arrangement view so you can see the waveform, it would add extra rows below it (each one using a different envelope colour) with the automated parameters. Is there a setting I need to turn on somewhere?

Man I'm absolutely loving Live 7. You know how when you work with a sequencer for ages, you start to build up a list in your head of things you really like about it and things that really shit you, and my list of things that shit me about Live keeps getting smaller and smaller the more I discover.

I find Ableton Live's automation really irritating compared to Cubase. No Line Tool, for starters. But also just trying to set breakpoints to precise levels and it won't do it. Or moving a breakpoint or line up/down without moving left or right. Or without creating any new ones. It's kinda hard to describe some of these things, but basically I've come to the conclusion that it's not worth persevering with. Cubase's automation is so much better - in seconds I can do precisely what I want and my urge to kill everyone is greatly lessened.

Or moving a breakpoint or line up/down without "moving left or right." - Hold down control and that will only allow movement up or down.

Double clicking on automation line will create a new point. Doubling clicking on an existing automation point will remove it.

I hope this lessen some of the urge

Yeah, it's interesting to hear what people think of that stuff versus Cubase, cause in the end I reckon I spend half my time editing envelopes so it makes sense that it should be easy to do.

I've found the following shortcuts really helpful:

As Snowie said you can move a line node just up/down using CTRL.
Holding CTRL while dragging a node will go into "fine tuning" mode, so you can move values exactly back to 0 even if the track you're editing isn't very large on screen.
Double-clicking will create/delete a line node.
CTRL+B will toggle pencil/line mode.
CTRL 1 + 2 will change the density of the grid that the pencil snaps to.

Once you figure out how to get the most out of both the pencil mode and line mode, it's really easy to flip back and forth and create precise envelopes.

For me the best one is CTRL+B, which means you can keep your mouse pointer AT the envelope you're editing the whole time, and use your left hand to switch between line/pencil mode, change grid density etc quickly. Really fast... before I used to have to move the mouse all the way up to the top of the screen, select the line/pencil toggle, then move the mouse back down. It sounds dumb, but when you're editing a few hundred envelopes in a session, every little bit of streamlining helps.

Hahaha, it is in there but you do have to dig around for awhile to find it all. I actually read the manual from end to end on the train to/from work as I wanted to get the most out of it. Learned lots of stuff, but I'm sure there's still things I'm not taking advantage of. A lot of streamlining is actually forming the habit of doing things the quick way, not just knowing how to do it... and that just takes practice.

The built in tutorials that come with it are actually really decent, and the context help window (bottom left corner) is a godsend when you're starting out.
