I don't know if this has been discussed before

but I think

Myspace TV is greater than Youtube

Clearer, faster uploads and availability, better forum functions and ratings.

it just comes down to the flash player being used (thus far). i rate google's higher, because you can specify the point in the video to play from the uri.

they'll only get better and better as time goes by, too. adobe's flash technology has come so far in that past 5 years. still blows me away, even with the niggles in it.

hope someone can help me out with this - coz no one who sells tvs seems to know!

we're looking at getting a new tv and it has a usb input on the back.

does this mean we can plug our external hard drive / flash drive straight into the tv and flick through our avi files? or do you still need some piece of hardware in between?

thanks. just did some googling and found this though :(
According to Samsung, their TV with USB port is for JPG and MP3 only.

"A side-panel USB port allows you to connect a USB mass storage device to view JPEG files and play MP3 audio files, including JPG slideshows with accompanying mp3 sound."
http://au.answers.yahoo.com/answers2/fr ... 922AAvF9ux

damn!

have to find some kind of small piece of hardware that i can have between the hard drive and tv i reckon. got hundreds of movies as avi files so would be really handy to just have them hooked up to the tv permanently so you can flick through them...

that answers that. also you will find that those ports would only accept drives formated with oldschool FAT file systems which limits you to 4GB flash drives. or a butload of 4gig FAT partitions on a HDD hah.

we have a $100 dvd player/recorder we got from dick smiths with and 80g hard drive for recording but it has a usb on it and as long as the dvd player plays divx which most do now it plays avi's off any usb stick or hard drive.

brand is hicon which is crap but just get a cheap divx dvd player w/ usb.

Well that's super annoying then.

yeah we both have laptops though and don't want to leave them permanently hooked up to the tv.

I was hoping with the usb port that I could buy a new external hard drive specifically for that purpose. dump all of my avi files on it and just leave it hooked up to the tv to flick through stuff when we wanted it... hmmmmmm.

we run a media centre thats goes alright on the TV screen. Actually run the TV through it first so we are able to record tv straight to file, handy too, can program to record in advance, or same time each week. Also means all music and files are available over the network in other rooms.

what fents has is a recorder with a hard drive built in. the cheap dvd players (i have one also) with the USB port will still be limited to flash drives as it wont be able to read massive hard drives. you are still going to have to have something hooked up.

as i am in between HTPC's, all i do at home at the moment is transfer whatever movie i want to watch onto my flash drive and play it thru the $30 ALDI dvd players USB port. works a charm. sounds like you dont want to be bothered with doing that tho. (and you dont shop at aldi :P)

what you really want is a dedicated Home Theater PC (HTPC). you can get them pre made or you can build one yourself. basically just runs windows media center (XP or Vista) and you use a remote to control it. can connect to other pc's wirelessly or via a LAN cable. get TV guides from the internet. set it to record you fav shows, watch movies, photos, etc. will do everything.

but for the meantime just think about a cheap DVD player with USB or a Recorder/player like fenton has.

also, you dont have to have your laptop plugged in all the time. just get a video and audio cable and have it plugged in the TV and when you want just plug the laptop in. easy.

hmmmmm. very interesting.

how much would we be looking at for a decent htpc?

for now the cheap dvd player could be the go. got a 2gb flash drive already so guess it's not TOO much effort to transfer a movie to that for now :P

i'm just trying to come up with a bit more of a permanent solution in the long term though. i guess the htpc could be the go for that.

did that and works fine, aldi $99 dvd recorder and $175 500gb usb2 hard drive, you can save $60 by getting aldi dvd player for $39.. works a treat, though takes about 3 minutes for drive to mount on dvd player.

cant get anything but flash drive to mount. 60gig drive doesn't even spin up!.

anyway!

a prebuilt HTPC will set you back around as much as you want to spend. such as http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... 0204063135

fairly excessive haha. you can get one made for say prolly $800? havent looked into them for a while so im not sure on part costs.

you could prolly build one out of an old pc case and some new parts but that is a pain if you dont know how to or dont know anyone who can do it for you.

I'm strongly considering that one too. What price are you looking at?

Best I've seen:
$2895 @ webprice.com.au ($35 delivery)
$2845 @ digitalcentre.com.au ($27 delivery)

The price range is crazy. Up to $3500!

And Samsung are doing a cash back thing too. There's never been a better time...

yeah it looks pretty good.

we had pretty much decided on the sony bravia (KDL46XBR) but have been swayed to the samsung. they use the same type of panels, but with the samsung you can get the level higher panel (with 25,000:1 contrast ratio, rather than 18,000:1 contrast) for way cheaper. it's also got 3 rather than 1 hdmi inputs, 3 years warranty rather than 1, swivel screen, usb input. and it looks nicer too!

we're getting a 32 inch too (Samsung LA32R81BDX), so will get a decent cashback with the redemption deal they're doing!

i'm lucky that i have a family member who works for an av company, so i get trade price through him! well cheap ;)

Sony is still good though.

nah. same panel but all the other components are diff. not put together as well. sony is all japanese made and the samsung is malaysian.

a big deciding factor was also the samsung has a really really glossy finish on the screen. check it out if you go into a shop where they sell both. we got them to turn both to a plain back screen, side by side, the reflection on the blacks of all the signage in the store and the ceiling lights was no joke about 10 times more glare-y on the samsung.

as our big one is going in a room which is super bright, with floor to ceiling windows on three sides it would just be shit watching it in the day / afternooon, summer evenings etc. sony screen was SO much nicer.

we're loving it!

that looks cool too.

Does this:
Suported Formats:
Video: MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DVD-Video (ISO**, IFO, VOB)
Audio: MP3, WMA, AC3, Ogg Vorbis
Photo: JPEG (up to 8MB pixels), BMP, TIF, PNG
Subtitle: SMI, SRT, SUB, SSA
mean no AVI files though? Need something that will play AVI.
