Tasmania
neither do I.
I'd only take the Ferry if you are planning to take your car Steve. Otherwise tis a bit of a cunt and you're better of getting plane.
Taking the car is a good idea though, you can camp just about anywhere without booking or whatever.
Wineglass bay is meant to be one of the best spots.
Food standard in hobart resteraunts is very high from my exerience.

get a price on da boat... when we were looking at going over, the boat was going to cost us 1.2G over and back, where flights were about $500 (and that was pricey time of year).
I wish we could have abseiled the dam wall (gordon dam) when we went ... biggest regret! http://www.about-australia.com/travel-g ... -tasmania/

They were advertising car on boat for MUCH cheaper than that during their recent campaign.
Passenger fare on Spirit of Tasmania: currently $120 each way
Car: $61 each way*
*conditions apply

crazy area, with all this green and un-touched wildness you have Queenstown right in the middle which is almost a moon-scape it's so barren...

LOL....
def take a car and spend a few days driving down through north and east coast on way to hobart. west coast is good but depends how long you are tehre for.
not much to see in devonport when you get off the boat, so would drive to launceston and stay there for teh night. Boags brewery is there, the tours/etc are pretty average I think (good beer though).
Check out and walk into cataract gorge, smoke some cones (big youf activity in tas) be amazed at the scenery etc. Would drive north 1hr to the rough beaches/national park near mouty of river...name escapes me..stop off at winery. For food unless you are interested in spending $140 on a set menu at Stillwater Id get a heap of stuff from the deli next door (richies mill 5 min walk from city) and take that with you to eat.
lol actually i could go onforever. PM for details
(then drive to east coast via fingal and windy roads deep bush etc - stay on east coast one night, go fishing, eat fish, go to coles bay shoot animals, drive to hobart go to cascade brewery - beautiful location, smoke more cones on mt wellington, go raving at halo, eat seafood)
i kept on going - PM for specifics. Should be a good time of year, it will be a bit cold but may/june isnt too wet which is good. I love crisp cold dry weather anyway.

How long are you thinking of getting down there for?
If it's an extended trip you may be better taking your car with you, as you'll need it to get around. Public transport in Tasmania is nothing in comparison to what you'd be used in Melbourne.
Bare in mind that the ferry isn't exactly cheap, especially if you're thinking of getting a cabin. The car + ocean view recliners is usually not too bad given that you'll not have to worry about the cost of hiring a car when you're there. If you want a cabin, you'll be paying a mint for it.
From Hobart:
- Tahune Airwalk
- Mount Wellington Walks
- Huonville
- Cascade Brewery
- Cadbury chocolate factory tour
- Port Arthur
- Coal River Valley wine region
-
From Launceston:
- Cataract Gorge
- Boags Brewery Tour
Make sure you also check out
- Cradle Mountain / Lake St. Clair / Walls of Jerusalem
East Coast:
- Freycinet national park / Coles Bay / Wineglass Bay
West Coast
- Franklin River, Gordon River
- Queenstown (Mining town - unbelievable scenery though, not much else there)
-
THere's plenty else you can do, I might come back and update later.

Yep. damn cold there.
But it's beautiful, and I would definitely recommend bringing the car over.
The ferry is kind of fun, but heaps of people got very sick (me included), they said it was the roughest weather in ten years and even though it was a huge boat we had to wait out at sea for a few hours before we could dock. Sick as a dog.. Was kinda worth it, they had an awesome deal, I think it was $120 each way with the car for free or something.
You can't really get anywhere very easily without a car over there, and it's an awesome place for drives through the forest

it is due to the copper mine pollution over the last 100 years. The gases produced by smelting at the mine killed every plant and tree in sight for miles and turned the Queen River (the main river that runs through town) into an almost fluorescent orange, and it is still pretty much the same these days. The hills are slowly re-vegetating due to better tailings & emissions practises, but I would definitely recommend checking it out if you're down that way.. most of the West Coast area is pristine and untouched (eg. beaches and rainforests). The Gormanston Hill (pictured in deviants post) is a sight to see..
