Last night at the Minus afterparty in Detroit at St. Andrews Hall, Beatportal spotted Richie Hawtin hanging out by the bar.

So we grabbed the famous techno DJ and asked him about the mysterious Cube, which he and Minus crew are promoting as a new club concept.

Hereâ€™s what Richie Hawtin had to say about The Cube.

What is The Cube?

â€œItâ€™s an interactive cube structure covered by LEDs that recognizes people whoâ€™ve signed up for Contakt membership.

â€œIf you join Contakt as a member you get a special card which is embedded with a microchip.

â€œThe Cube can detect when a member is in the club.

â€œIt also broadcasts messages via bluetooth and LAN.

â€œSo when you come to a Contakt event, anyone who has their bluetooth turned on will receive a message.

â€œAnyone who has LAN connectivity on their mobile will also receive a message.

When Richie Hawtin played, The Cube changed colour

â€œSometimes that message might contain a picture, or music.â€

How do you and the rest of the Minus artists interact with The Cube?

â€œFrom the DJ booth or stage, we can trigger The Cube into various states.

â€œUsually itâ€™s blue and white, but I can make it turn red or green when I play.

â€œWe can control its intensity and more.â€

Who built The Cube?

â€œA team of about six of us built it. I came up with the idea, and then we worked with lighting experts and technicians to build it.â€

You guys are just all sour because you haven't signed up for Contakt mebership. If you signed up the cube would know when you were in the club, then if Ritchie played it might turn red.

Let me spell it out.

When Ritchie plays, the cube changes colour.

Before he starts it is blue. Then it might change to green or red as he plays.

We can only imagine what impact that would have on the dancefloor, presumably even more-so if the Cube has identified Contakt members in the club.

I will hazard a guess the intensity will be increased.

It's amazing what technology has given us. To think that one day there will be a cube in every room, and it will enable us to say hello to people as we walk into that room, something makind has dreamed of since the dawn of techno.

expected a huge cube the size of humans, and its a giant rubix cube made out of noodle boxes with one LEd inside it!
and six matrix rejects wishing they were keanu holding it?!?!

i have ideas for interactive parties with multi sensory feedback for punters..

but THIS, a noodle box that goes RED, has exceeded my wildest expectations.
