jbs: i've hit up central america for a few months. not panama or belize though. belize - great diving, bit of backpacker scene from what i hear. panama would be sick, but ran outta time.

dunno about cheap! have you looked at how much it's gonna cost to get a top-model 4wd for 3 weeks (you'll need a good one with full safety kit-up/phone etc for that much wilderness driving) and pay one-way fee from exmouth/start-point to darwin? would be thinking this would be more than 3 fat gorillas just for the car...gnat wrote:yeps! decided it's a cheap quick tripdengelman wrote:gnat: got inspired much

vietnam is very 'cultural' imho.
as in, most of the tourists i saw were old and grey, and on tours and the like.
its more expensive than thailand
cold in the north, and i found the people a bit more 'french' in their attitude to me than the thais or the cambodians...
as in, not speaking english when they can etc.
thailand has it all and then some, which is why so many people go there worldwide.
cheap cheap everything, fantastic beaches and loads of em, islands the best thing there and i havent been to chaing mai but would go next time (in the north the old city)
bangkok is full on and not for the faint hearted or person in need of relaxation.
if your in that area id reccomend cambodia or laos for the best experience...best prices..best people...
laos is the only place in south east asia i havent been, and im an idiot.
next time I head that way ,laos is gonna be A1 destination...

I've done Vietnam. Loved it. Went to Hanoi, Halong bay, Hue, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City, and Can Tho in 2.5 weeks. We spent the longest time in Hoi An because it was the most relaxing and chilled out.jbs wrote:Come on who has "done" Vietnam.

I like the colonial history of Hanoi. Did 4 days there, with an overnighter on a junk in Halong bay. Halong Bay is a must do! We opted for an expensive boat and were stuffed to the gills with the excellent food served at meal times. Drinks were expensive so we took some rice vodka along (but I drank too much and spent all night being sick ) Had some cool ppl on our boat.
From there we did the o'night train to Hue. We didnt really like the vibe of this town, so we did a tour to the DMZ (demilitarised zone) which was very informative and good to see the countryside. Then we bused it to Hoi An, with some beautiful scenery on the way through the mountains.
Hoi An turned into a 5 day stay so we could wander the markets, do cooking classes, read, drink, do nothing, get clothes made, eat all the great food. Did a day trip to My Son to see the Cham ruins bombed by the Americans.
Flew from Danang to HCMC as my tall ex-partner was sick of being crammed into the bus seats and the flight was cheap.
Did 4 days or so in HCMC city. Did overnight trip of Mekong Delta which was cool. Included a visit to Cu Chi tunnels which were a stark contrast and more claustrophobic than the underground town we had seen in the DMZ.
Travel was piss easy to organise. Loads of ppl speak english. Hotels were cheap and you can haggle them for prices. My only regret was not getting to Sapa, but I'll do that next time.
Just because I rock, doesn't mean I'm made of stone.

but if its you and your lady and you want postcard beach with few peeps and amazing jungle, thats where its at...
Question:
I am going round the world for 12 months.I want to be in the UK from month 6 with the option of working ie: On a working VISA.
A Visa consultant from the UK embassy just told me this is impossible. I'd need to come back to NZ/AU after six months, then apply wait and go back to the UK due to not being able to apply unless I am entering in the next 3 months.
???
Surely lots of people do this???

We got to go there for our work retreat this year! It was a very different experience from being there backpacking in 2002, but it was just good to be back. I would love to live there. Best bars and clubs and architecture and art and apfelkuchen ever!

Re: The Travel Thread
I saw the Word Travels TV show on National Geographic channel this Friday evening 8pm ish. The blonde co-host, Julia Dimon, is one of my dearest friends in the world, she's from Toronto. Surreal to see.
I did the website for them, one of my finest pieces of work, check it - www.wordtravels.tv
Seasons 2 & 3 are being filmed at the moment, Julia & Robin are heading to Sri Lanka next week, and I'm upgrading the website a little bit.
Good show, good places, and they're funny.

if you go north, hire a car and check out waterholes, all the way up to daintree...
fucking beautiful.
i am thinking of ten days in japan with old friend in sept....
