Martial Arts - close to city
Its been something like 10-15 years since i did kung fu as a teenager - kind of interested in picking up something again - i think i prefer forms like kung fu to karate ...
anyone practice martial arts at the moment? any places to check in the city area or northside?
cheers

Re: Martial Arts - close to city
Yes, big into brazillian jiu jitsu and mma - it's pretty much what my life revolves around.
Very, very rough, and not for everyone though.
Thing I love about it tho, it's a highly evolved, highly efficient, and extemely effective art.
Did karate for years, and boxed for a long time too - walked into a BJJ gym a few years back and realized I had stumbled into a superior fighting art.
The skill based heirarchy, and the hands on approach to training is what makes it great.
Plus, you truly learn to end a fight without blood, and I dig that.
I train at Hangar 4 in Preston - i'm there every night.
Love it, highly recomended.

PS - if you want feedback on a particular place FS, let me know, and I can probably give you feedback - I've been in the game for a while now.
There's a new BJJ place opened in Collingwood apparently - probably well worth checking out

Re: Martial Arts - close to city
I think i prefer a fairly 'soft' form of movement. i used to go to chan's martial arts (from NZ, theres one in camberwell now). it was nice because it has a basis in tai chi for movement but not with the medation approach.
it would be nice finding something with that softer style that wasn't a whole train trip away though

Re: Martial Arts - close to city
I used to do wing chun kung fu and can't recommend it highly enough. Very effective, but without the "I stopped his punch with my head" type bizzo that seems to plague the industry. Also, I'm only small and a girl and the fact that I could out-hit and out-manoeuvre the manly men is testament to it being a matter of skill and style, rather than who can beat their head against a tree for the longest.
The school I used to go to closed a while ago, but apparently a mate has tracked down somewhere good in the cbd (Collins St mebbe?) If you're interested, I can prolly find out
Just don't go to William Cheung

Most def interested in this kind of thing. Been wanting to get fit for ages and I'd rather get fit doing something useful, or learning something useful, rather than starjumps and aerobics. I'm a walking victim atm, would like to be able to protect myself

Indeed, me too. Been wanting to get back into training for ages.

Re: Martial Arts - close to city
Yes, karate and kung-fu were huge until the advent of the UFC, and then a highly skilled BJJ practicioner called Joyce Gracie took everyone out (including a plethora of dudes twice his size), and completely revolutionized martial arts.Blaxter wrote:What about Wang Chun, use to be pretty big in the 80's.
I know nothing of Kung-fu, but have full respect for a martial art that holds onto traditional values. Some people dig that side of things. I did karate for years, and when I wasn't competing and fighting, the traditional side of it still held a big part for me. Have also witnessed Shaolin monks first hand, and those dudes are iron tough. Yet against a grappler, there really is no answer.
For me, realisim and progression into the modern age are the biggest factors. Hence why women who want to learn to defend themselves against rapists and attackers are flocking to BJJ. Street fights are dirty, bloody and nasty - and need to be over quick. BJJ has all the answers, for any situation.
There is no comparison or substitute. In the last 15 years it has been proven time and time again.
Combine this with boxing or Mui Thai, and you have the full package - it's called MMA.
Anyone who wants to be enlightened, I recomend a traditional martial art.
Anyone who wants to be able to take someone much bigger and possibly tougher than them, and submit them while taking the smallest amount of damage possible, BJJ is your martial art.
Check it....

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=215Ai-2dF ... re=related
People like what they like, and I really hate when dudes get in pissing contests about what martial art will beat what. Different horses for courses. Just offering you an alternative here
But you can be a world champion at whatever you do, you go to the ground with a grappler, and it will be over in a very short amount of time. That's why I feel safe wherever I go, because I know BJJ
It takes all the agro out of me, has made me humble, and is highly rewarding.
The closest sport I can compare it to is skateboarding, because learning a new submission or escape is just like learning a new trick on a board. Lots of precision, but at the same time a million ways to do it - always with your own personal touch.
Again, highly recomended
Thought maybe I could swing someone here - but good luck in whatever you do guys

Re: Martial Arts - close to city
For me its not about the superior fighting style - and i dont doubt what your saying either. but as much, or more, for me its about the form of practice and how i develop from that - rather than the fight. of course the self defence benefit will flow from it, even if not as effective.
chans was good cos it had elements of tai chi but also small circle ju jitsu

Re: Martial Arts - close to city
I have long been a pupil of the Scottish Martial Art - Fuk Yu.
Its mostly headbutting people and then kicking them once they are on the ground.
You can find a suitable training establishment on just about every second street corner in Melbourne, my personal preference is to go for the ones that serve Carlton Draught, but yanno, each to their own.
