Re: wtf is going on this summer?
It's a simple answer.
Dance music as a whole has shat itself.
There is no longer any lure to seeing a completely untalented person spin other peoples music badly.
Plus, the drugs aren't a tenth as good as they used to be.
Also, overkill from promoters - Eg: A person can only see the Stanton Warriors or Raja Ram so many times in a given time frame before shit starts to get old.
And when dance music is as ugly as this (See link below), I'm grabbing my guitar, and tuning into Gold 104.3

hai boys!
im at work, its poo!
i have to say i predicted this months ago dan, the bubble has burst! just like housing prices.
but i have faith that out of the ashes comes new stuff, new crews, new tactics, new styles...
it just might be the next gen tho, some of us are too old and jaded to see/make it happen...
emo and indie are already over, so wait for the kids who are 12 now to turn 18!!

I've been going to see bands most of this year.
Rock'n'roll will get ya home by 3am.
Having said that I have been impressed by warehouse parties and the efforts of BBA's production values.

Having said that, I've been having more fun playing bass than searching for the latest break no-one has mashed together with Madonna or daft punk.
But, I'm earning a living from djing. Well a fair one, it's paying the bills / rent / food / vices ok. How much more can I diss it before it bites me in the arse?

more of all that please universe.

PCP - have another look, I wrote - will get ya home - no implication that included myself actually taking that option.
GK - agreed - tonight is full proof of underground crews throwing wikkid parties.

Internatties are becoming less and less viable.... way to exxy to get them here... We've missed tons this year just because we couldn't justify the price tag tbh.

Re: wtf is going on this summer?
Dan, to answer your question quite simply:
The Australian dollar lost over 30% of its value.
All of a sudden, artist fees, in either US or EURO dollars increased by 30%.
That's the real reason hot bbq got amalgamated with summerdayze (rather than 'cancelled') imho.
People are forgetting that Summadayze, Sensation etc sell fuckloads of tickets.
Want "underground" music tonight?
$15 gets you into Sunny Lounge tonight, La di daa,
Phil K, Rollin Connection, Gavin Keitel, Simon Baker (UK), Mike Callendar.
FIFTEEN DOLLARS
LESS WITH GUESTLIST ACTION!
We have some of the most talented tech/prog producers and dj talent on the entire globe.
People in Europe (even the FRENCH!) would give their left arm to be able to see Phil K etc with some regularity.
Darkbeat are putting on killer parties and Pretty Simple and the Likes of you are going from strength to strength.
Shit, even my good friends who put on Ostara this year sold 1,000 tickets - and this was ALL local talent. One thing that this event made me realise, is that if you put on something wih honest passion, you will get a great outcome.
Happy New year.
This is a financial situation, not indicative of the entire scene.
"Breaks" may be in decline, but prog/mnml/tech are going through a second renaissance.
Lighten up everyone.
Happy New year
PS
SoulWhiteMan and Deb back in Melbourne indefinitely.

Re: wtf is going on this summer?
exactly what is happening now happened in 2001 - ... big expensive parties dropping serious dollars (like the GCSSS and Welcome 2001), too much supply in terms of music choice, venue choice, internationals and a dive in demand relatively quickly, as well as shitty wider economic issues all compounding into lower attendances, greater risk, bigger losses.
What seemed to happen then was
- less big parties but better big parties
- better parties full stop regardless of scale - no more cookie cutter approach, interesting production, acts etc
- new bars/clubs opening and offering something different
- cost of internationals via agents coming down - buyers market to the benefit of local party organisers
- promoters looking to use different venues - 6 years ago a dance party at the espy for instance was as foreign a concept as you could imagine
- new blood in terms of djs, acts, agents etc
- more thought into the drawing power of international talent - ie, better research into sales/awareness/history ... instead of booking acts based on a location there was more thought into size of market/demand etc
Generally you find in music the industry is cyclical and things do repeat themselves ... I don't think it'd be too much of a stretch to imagine some of the above will happen again.

Re: wtf is going on this summer?
Its because people are borrowing money they cant afford to lose to throw unrealistic nights.
If there was more business sense, credible advertising and less hype with no substance everyone would benefit.
Dance music was never meant to be a commercial media, and yet its the global explosion of the internet and worldwide emigration of whole scenes that has allowed to come this far.
The breaks and drum and bass scenes in Spain, and Russia are bigger than they have ever been anywhere else at any point in time. They are thriving beyond belief.
Dubstep and Grime in the UK is pretty much the biggest selling urban genre out there, and yet Trance continues to outsell every other genre in Dance music in every country in the world.
The problem for labels is essentially piracy and the decline of vinyl sales, but trends are moving quickly towards favouring the digital future of DJing and also open up more scope for creativity and diversity. I think we're going to see the scene evolving hugely over the next couple of years, parties that don't stick to a single genre but very greatly in tempo and content giving punters better value for money. Its all symptomatic of the bubble bursting as Kitty said but I think the future looks rosy for those with the imagination and savvy to do it differently, embrace new technology and harness the huge market that is Generation Y.
I also wanted to add that there has been a kind of DJ backlash in the commercial media and you're seeing a lot of kids being turned on to live music again, gettiing into real bands playing real instruments, and yet a lot of them will progress from there toward electronic music as some stage and will stick to it. Not because of drugs, not necessarily because of parties but because of the way it captures real emotion and soul and conveys imagery which will inspire their imagination.
This is nothing I haven't seen before I dont think, it happened in London with the collapse of the free party scene a long time ago. The new wave of electro and house music has spawned a staggering number of hybridised parties there and I reckon thats what will happen here.

Re: wtf is going on this summer?
^^^ In regards to Russia, there is a lot of dirty money involved in electronic music over there. You expect a lil bit of it but not to the extent you could imagine over there. The budgets they spend on their gigs are enormous but they have more than one source of income than just the door sales. We cant compete with that down here.
But they do get interesting stuff getting mainsream promo - darkside filth DNB on Russian MTV which is pretty darn cool. Couldn't imagine Tech Itch or Dylan doing a TV show spot on Australian MTV but they do in Russia every time.

all the kids are dressing circa 1983-87 anyway - not much of a rejection stance.
