bugger me no one plays breaks anymore
Re: bugger me no one plays breaks anymore
By 4/4 I don't think people are talking about time signatures, even though that's what 4/4 implies. But more the programming of beats.
I.e. 4/4 (house) beat: kick-snare-kick-snare

Yep I know whacha mean Direkt I often talk about it that way too, just in the convo I was having he meant time signature-wise.

House Breaks TBH.
Actually quite like a few of these tracks, but this is what I mean when i refer to 4/4 beats in breaks, with out caring what that might mean technically.
2 Layo & Bushwacka! – Deep South (Ils mix)
3 Krafty Kuts – Don’t Stop
4 Rennie Pilgrem – Some Place Funky (Wigwam Remix)
5 Meat Beat Manifesto – Radio Babylon
6 Lee Coombs – The Future Sound Of Retro
7 X-Press 2 – Smoke Machine (Koma & Bones Remix)
8 Soul Of Man – Dirty Waltzer (Remix)
9 Freq Nasty – Freq ‘a’ zoid
10 Stanton Warriors – Da Virus (Latin 2-Step Mix)
11 Shut Up & Dance – Derek Went Mad (Remix)
1 Jedi Knights – Catch The Break
2 Renegade Soundwave – The Phantom
3 Laidback – Bass Is A Drug
4 Chickenlips – Master Jammin’ (2003 Re-edit)
5 West Street Mob – Electric Boogie (Junior Cartier Mix)
6 Lee Coombs & Meat Katie – Two Men On A Trip
7 Rennie Pilgrem & Dub Species – The Sermon
8 Elite Force & Meat Katie – Saveena (exclusive track)
9 Organic Audio – Nurega (Medicine8 Mix)
10 Phil Kieran – Vitalian House
11 Ils – No Soul (PMT Mix)

1 Elektronauts – Bumper (Plump DJs Vocal Mix)"House-breaks" are the point where House’s hypnotic 4/4 groove and Breakbeats’ funkasised beats collide.

Re: bugger me no one plays breaks anymore
As someone who does A&R for four different Breaks labels I'm probably more aware than most where the scene is headed musically.
Lots of newer pretty exciting artists developing in breaks at the moment IMO.
People like Vent, Mars, Magnet Men, Dilemn, Equalizers, ID, Reso, Pro7, Mesmer, Rico, Neztic, Karl Sav, Wavewhore, Loop de Ville, IITone, Sidel etc etc.
Its not surprising that a lot of them end up making house music or something else though with sales continuing to plummet as vinyl dies a painful death.
A lot of smaller labels have suffered trying to keep putting out vinyl at great personal cost, and I attribute this to the demise of the popularity of breaks more than any other factor.
Its just too expensive to produce for such a tiny market. Now there is the issue of promoting releases online which can also be very costly to do effectively.
The bottom line is, there was never much money in breaks in the first place, and it doesn't exactly pull people in through its inherent glamour or underground status so as a label owner or dj or producer you do have to ask yourself 'what exactly is it about breaks as a genre, apart from the music, that I do like - and is it really worth pursuing?'

yeah I know it gets like that. I'd say that house is slower and more musical, melodies and chords etc. Techno to me tends to be faster and more about textures.DBoy wrote:How is house not just techno?

the reason we still do it is because of the people involved, and the passion we still have for it.
you'll probably have given up your DJing in a couple of years when you realise its not going anywhere and dubstep's not cool anymore.

Dunno. I'm not big on either genre... but the techno my mate listens to sounds a shitload different to the house I've heard out and about... although I supposed there's a miriad of house and techno sub-styles also.

Re: bugger me no one plays breaks anymore
me not technical when i talk about music but
techno to me is driving beats, that often build slowly and take you on a real journey, but can also be terribly boring if not done right.
house to me is track by track, not as much about the journey, and has the lovely addition of what i like to call 'bikini vocals' > vocals sung by some chick in a white bikini.
the specific sounds and basslines can be used in both, but its how they are put together that defines them.
i prefer techno.
and i actually prefer 'breakbeat' to techno, and i grew up on techno.

BTW If anyone's looking for my new dubstep mix, hit me up. $30.00 per download (it's that good). Also, I got a fidget house mix for $20.00. I take pay pal and both mixes come with a special 'I Was There When Breaks Broke in Melbourne 2009' t-shirt AND a limited edition stop-start tape mix of nothing but the best grime/electro-house crossover classics...with MC Danielsan on the hype.
Get em while they're hot...will be true collectors items. Petey already hit me up for 10 copies. I'm a weapon.

I play breaks, not only do I Play breaks but I play new releases every week on both my shows and out a gigs! Breaks aint dead theres fuck loads of new music out there from wikid producers.
yeah the scene has changed and a lot of the old names are no more, or are playing other styles but for those willing to take the time and listen to what current I think youll find it more than pleasing.
For heavier stuff check out Afghan headspin, Barrcode and Journey man, C83, Beta et al
Funkier stuff check out Groove Diggers, NAPT, Thayer ( as always ), Refunk ( Jay Stewart )
techy stuff check out Luqas ( esp his new one Creeper! Epic tune ), Chris Carter, Peep Show owners, Cut La Roc, Retroid....
Theres also Jinx, Neztic, D-FUNK, Mister Frisk, Mesmer, Projectiles, 601 and loads and loads more all making current music thats well good!

Re: bugger me no one plays breaks anymore
Alot of good breaks are now just being labelled dubstep just cause theres some element of a bass wobble ppl label it dbstep automatically. Most of the good breaks I have got this year has been by surprise wen I'm diggin for dubstep and find somethin with its snares on the 2nd and 4th with some LFO freq on the bass.
For me theres not a big difference between the two- the most obvious is the snare on the 3rd in dubstep and that snare is drenched in reverb. The build up and drops are pretty different between the two- but could work either way I think.

quite a few dubstep producers are making something which resembles breaks. and yes, very early on, some dubstep was almost an extension of breakstep (cf. early vex'd).
breaks it ain't tho, not by far.

I still play dnb and so do a lot of people.
If this many people are still passionate about Breaks they won't die. Just going through a lull in Aus innit.
