What's with the resurrection of this thread?

Seems pretty pointless to me.

Maybe threads that haven't had a post in say... 6 months? Should be deleted?

Just a thought.
Little did I know, and even less did I care.

That gig at revolver was wicked. So many good tunes over the 4-5 hours he played.

These guys are performing before Mr Scruff at 10:30. Looks very cool....

Tom Tom Club

When I found out I was going to be interviewing Tom Tom Club, I assumed it was the 1980s new wave band of the same name formed out of half of The Talking Heads. I was excited. When I found out that this Tom Tom Club isn't actually a band at all, more a collective of contemporary, hardcore circus actors, a world beatbox champion and some really talented hip-hop musicians, I was surprised. And even more excited.

Tom Tom Club is a very recently formed and constantly evolving performance - masterminded by circus director Scott Maidment and musically by Ben Walsh (of acclaimed live drum'n'bass group The Bird), boasting the skills of DJ Dizz1, who's worked with the likes of DJ Dexter Lordz Of The Fly and Budspells, as well as beatboxer Tom Thumb and a whole host of renown tumblers and acrobats.

"All these artists I've worked with before in different capacities," Scott Maidmart explains. "Tom Thumb, well, a lot of people beatbox but he's fucking amazing, he's on a whole other level. I did a show with him last year, for the Brisbane festival and got to know him through that. I've done a few shows with Ben Walsh and (circus performer) Tom Flannigan on and off for the last couple of years. So I knew everybody and gradually we put all that together and then Ben Walsh said we should get DJ Dizz1 because he's an amazing scratcher and that would just add another level to it and make it more dynamic musically. So we did!"

One of the most interesting things about Tom Tom Club's performance is that it never has a set progression for the show to take, it's up to the whims of the performers and the crowd to determine how a particular night's show will turn out.

"There are set elements but things will change within them. It's live, so however the audience is responding, they play a big part in it as well. The first time we did it was at the Woodford Festival," Maidmart says, obviously enthused, "the audience just went berserk for it, so some bits happened more and some bits got extended and so each time the Tom Tom performance happens differently."

Not only does the show itself change each time, but the actual components of the group are always different, thanks to their consistent involvement of special, un-announced guests to complement and heighten the vibe of their show. Both musical and acrobatic, the guests could be anyone from an extreme physical performer to an obscure musician.

"Part of it is that we always plan to have a special guest. So, hopefully, you could come a couple of times and see the influence that the guest has. Last time we had a special guest called the Space Cowboy, who's a sword-swallower, who does hat manipulation and juggling with hats in a really funky way.

"Ben Walsh works with Bobby Singh, who's a tabla player and he'll do a special guest spot, there're a few other circus performers - trapeze artists. That's part of it, that it's more like you join the club," Maidmart laughs.

Despite having performed only once (at the aforementioned Woodford Festival in December last year) and receiving only a small amount of publicity so far, the interest in the group, both in Australia and abroad, has been enormous.

"After the Fringe we go to Melbourne and then we're opening the Castlemaine Festival and we're already talking about a season later on in the year for Edinburgh, the festival there. We've even gotten interest in London the year after. It's early days yet, but one of the main things is the collaboration between all the people, that's what people have been so excited about."

Every member of the group is a fantastically talented performer in their own right - each artist involved with Tom Tom Club could pull audiences on the strength of their personal performance alone, so getting the group of them together is a recipe for what should be a mind-blowing show, and the attention garnered, seems to be justified.

"It's a great group of people coming together from all different areas and that's what's exciting. Whether you like circus, or whether you like hip-hop music, or whether you like breakdance. All those sorts of elements, we've got a bit in there for all of you."

Bummed I missed him (was in next room). Heard he plugged in some rare post-processor worth about $15,000 to help with the show. Speaker time alignments ftw!
