MIFF

Post by dust »

That time of year again.

George Romero is here as a guest and there's a retrospective of his works.

I'm keen to see the Staxx Records doco, some Asian cinema and a few European films.

Anyone else going? Interested?

Fi - wanna go see something with me? :smt006

I went to the opening party last night. It was dope. Took these photos with my phone off the rooftop.

Opening flim was Not Quite Hollywood. A brilliant doco on OZPLOITATION. I encourage everyone to check it out. It's narrated by Quentin Tarantino. http://www.melbournefilmfestival.com.au ... 772&pg=166

This famous old Aussie stunt guy was there. He decided to relive the memories and set himself on fire out the front.. it was random!

One of NZ's finest movie moments.

Black Sheep was the name of the film I think

Best line -

"Fuck the sheep, let's get out of here"

"We don't have time for that bro"

HAhahah Sukiyaki Western Jango I saw that, it was crazy and awesome like most of Miike's movies.
Really liked his one at MIFF last year, The Great Yokai War. Surreal

Lol at Tarantino...

To sum up though MIFF this year was crap compared to last year in my opinion, way less stand-out movies. And lots of the good ones are going to get released anyway.
Really liked Ashes of Time Redux, Sukiyaki, Three Monkeys, and one of the Romanian films. But lots of meh.

And to top it all off just about everything was sold out or packed - better marketing/advertising to get people to go, but not the best organisation, and like I said I don't even reckon the selection of movies was that good this year. So wtf

bassfreak how was the scratch perry doco? Would have liked to have seen it too, as well as the Phillip Glass one, but missed out / bad times

Yeah you just have to call up or buy a ticket in person and you can get them to create the account for you at the box office. Bit annoying but not the end of the world a bit of human interaction.

On weekend saw:

Che part 1 and part 2. Glorified things a bit no doubt but entertaining

5 Lost at Sea - world premiere of Jesse Martin 7 Josh Schmidt movie about their 2002 journey

Flame & Citron - dark Danish thriller set in WW2 about members of the resistance (Assassins)

All good stuff. Heard Inglorious Basterds was rad, mates that went and met some red carpetarians such as Geoffrey Rush

Next seeing Higher Force (Icelandic comedy) on tue and then Chocolate (Thai martialarts/com directed by OngBak1 dir) on Fri. Maybe End Game on thur

I thought it was great, kind of reminded me of the TV show "the shield" only english and set in 1980.... great shooting and cinametography... My GF thought is was slow and predictable... but I really enjoyed it.

Saw Chocolate tonight and really liked it. Heaps of Kung Fu if that's your thing, I was satisfied of both story and martial art techniques. In some parts the acting is so bad its actually funny.

Then after a 20 minute break I saw another movie Eden Park. Disturbing, and at the state quite tame but as the movie progresses the violence get worse and worse and you end up walking out of the cinema feeling sick in the stomach. So if you do like thriller/horror definitely check it.

I really want to see Antichrist but its sold out which sucks. Willem Dafoe ftw!

Saw Chocolate too. Same dir as ongbak1. V good, crazy martial arts and stunts. Nothing held back and no FX BS as you see at the end with some of the injuries
Might go see Ong Bak2 on Sunday to use up last minipass sesh but as its Tony Jaa directing as well etc might not be great, heard mixed things.

O antichrist thats von trier isn't it...dafoe is ftw but ive heard that movies got some pretty fucked up shit in it...
