Watched Fanboys tonite... pretty fucking funny. Heaps of Star Wars references with some great performances from the regular Hollywood comedy crew.

edit: Blinding the Marlin... oh my fuck I haven't laughed so hard at a dirty sex joke in so long

Inglorious Basterds is awesome.... so much attention to detail. Classic Tarantino story telling.

I went and saw The September Issue last night. Excellent doco for those into fashion. 8/10.
Loved the scene with Andre Leon Tally playing tennis. It was even better than the description of the scene I'd read.

Caught Inglourious Basterds last night.

Crap.

Too long. I know Tarantino likes his scenes that build character and mood but this was ridiculous. Characters are given whole scenes to introduce them and then aren't featured in the film again.

The acting for the most part is shocking. Brad Pitt sounds like a fucking jackass the whole time. The supporting cast is lifeless and stiff. The nazis all seem like complete idiots and the Basterds have zero personality. The two exceptions are the Bear Jew and Landa (who is spine chillingly evil and charming).

The movie just seems happy to trot along at a stupidly slow pace and then there is a 5 minute crescendo and bang its done. It just gets bogged down in pointless dialogue. People will say "Tarantino hallmark" but really its just pushing the line.

Oli has nailed. Did not like this film at all, except for Landa. I've enjoyed most of tarantino's films, but this was shite.

I was kind of the same. I enjoyed it, but thought it was lacking that usual Tarantino charm. IM a big fan of his movies and was expecting something huge. Spent the whole movie waiting for something to happen, and then it was over.
Totally agree on the characters introductions - i thought the Basterds were going to feature a lot more in the movie, but was sadly disappointed.

Ultimately it was a good movie, but not 'Tarantino' good... if that makes sense?

I saw 'Up' in 3D last night, my first ever experience. It was really cool :D They didn't use enough extended, in-my-face-reach-out-and-touch-it scenes though, most of it appeared to be 3d in the actual screen but it was still cool. The story was a nice one too but given we watched it on the 6th anniversary of my Dad's death I found a lot of it quite sad and poignant and I cried. I'm a big wuss like that.

Watched 'Romance and Cigarettes' last night.

Wierd but good. Killer cast, Steve Buchemi, guy from sopranos, susan sarandon, many moore, kate winslet as a slurry irish hooker, so many more...
half musical, quite a sad story but then they all break into song n dance. great costumes, colour, strangeness, right up my alley really.

i liked it.

Saw District 9 last night.
Was happily surprised, it was totally not what i was expecting!! Really fresh and different concept on the 'aliens invade earth' scenario. Deals with a fair bit racism throughout the movie, with alot of parallels able to be drawn to rl.
Great story line too. I couldn't second guess what was going to happen next. :)

recent films and summations:
  • 'ponyo': trippy as all hell and magnificently illustrated
  • 'taking woodstock': ang lee back on form, well done for a director who has never done comedy
  • 'inglorious basterds': great attention to detail and fine performances by waltz, laurent, pitt, et al. it's a different style of film to his trademark attention deficit style, but doesn't suffer from the change.
  • 'up': pixar smash it out of the park
  • 'blessed': ana kokkinos has delivered one of the best australian films that i've seen. see it.

re Inglourious Basterds.

I just realised that if you removed all the scenes with the actual Basterds in them and just left the Shosanna plotline in it the film would have actually been quite enjoyable.

Into the Wild - crazy film about this dude who ran away from home and tried to trek from his home to Alaska, and experience living in the wild. He had little to no money and no identification documents etc. This film was based on a true story and directed by Sean Penn. Was quite full on in bits like when kills and guts a moose with flies everywhere. moments of going mental and whatnot. Crazy film, not bad watch, but really slow going

It was slow but it was great i thought. all about really leaving society behind and finding oneself in nature. Pretty bittersweet ending too.

and Eddie Vedder made all the music, and its awesome, i went and bought the Cd.

Actually pretty good ( saw it on a plane and the other movies were pants so hard to tell really).

I knew NOTHING of the movie before seeing and I think this kind of helped as it kind of starts out dull but kind of builds and gets pretty dark and has some scenes/plotlines that fold out in a fairly interesting way....

You should check out some more Ang Lee films. His film The Wedding Banquet is a comedy. It's one of my favourite by him and very funny! Eat Drink Man Woman is also comedic and light hearted.

Went to ACMI last night and saw The Magician

http://www.acmi.net.au/fo_aus_noir_magician.aspx

All Adrian told me when he dragged me to see it was it was a documentary about a hitman. Wasn't expecting too much but it was actually a wicked flick (more mocku than doco). The very first scene has him killing a faceless nameless man which puts you into a frame of mind, you don't like the main character (Roy). But after the "director" of the doco follows him around on his job for a while you kind of get to like Roy's personality, he's funny and laid back and extremely Aussie. Albeit his job is fucked, he seems a decent man. There were a few laughs too. I'd recommend going to see it, worth the $13 pricetag. There's one more screening Sept 26th

Thanks to Oli and Liz for their reviews, went and saw Up last night. Lots of giggles enjoyed it even though it was hard to resist how flawed parts were and the lack of the law of physics was applied to the movie but I kept reminding myself it was made for the kids so I should chill and relax.

I also saw the new Bruce Willis movie Surrogates and thought it was a piece of crap. However due to a lack of concentrating I missed parts of it which meant the plot was hard to follow at times. Regardless I would wait for DVD...

I just finished watching Martyrs (French horror). The most fucking wrong, d1sgusting and unnecessary film i've seen in a long time (if not ever). It actually makes me feel quite sick to know that people could make a movie like this, and that others enjoy it. Utterly repulsive.
