Right...
Theres loads of LHBS (Local Home Brew Stores) around Melb...
Two over our way GS are Brewcraft in Burgunday St, Heidelberg and my local in Louis St Greensborough...whatever you do dont go to Heidelberg, the dude is 120 y.o, grumpy and basically has no idea and will sell you shit just to get sales.
Greensborough is the go - Dave who owns / runs is a fuking legend, always helpfull and knows loads.
1. Buy a fermenter kit - incls, Fermenter Barell, Hydrometer, Airlock, Seals etc etc.
2. Buy a can of coopers (or other brand) kit.
3. Boil it up with water and add, Hops (diff hops for diff beers) and Malt..
4. Put it all in the fermenter and watch it bubble away for 7-10 days, gotta be at the right temp (12-23c depending on the beer style, low temps for lagers, higher for ale's and wheats etc.)
5. Bottle and prime with dextrose, then cap all bottles.
6. After two weeks in bottles drink till you drop.
7. NEVER use suguars to make beers, despite what anyone tells u, incl coopers, they produce cidery flavours and make beer taste bad. Use Dextrose or Malt as a substitute.
/ End Lesson
GS if you want come round and discuss, you have my number!

once you have done kits for a while i'll give another lesson on ALL GRAIN brewing like what im doing now, 100% better than kits, but kits are good for learning.
Also once your sick of washing a million bottles, you will buy a keg system for $350 like i did and never have to wash an empty bottle again.
Brewing is addictive....so is drinking.

you can get Boags Premium kits now too!!!
I'd have to do it outside and I was worried about the outdoor heat (or lack of) fucking up the brew. Doesn't it have to be kept at a constant temp of about 25 degrees while brewing? (or am I getting that confused with growing pot?)
I have an outside fridge now that could easily be converted to hold kegs
I think I am, Therefore I am. I think
Yea it does have to be kept at the right temp mate, but all you have to do is store one of these somewhere :
They are about 70cm's high and 30 cm's round...fuk all room really...put it in a corner somewhere, laundry, kitchen, loungeroom.
There are ways of keeping the temps down - put the fermenter in a tub of water with frozen coke bottles etc.

Cheap mate - My local HBS sells kits for like $30 or $40 - thats everything u need beside's ut first brew...can of coopers kit plus hops n malt is about $20 - $30, so say $70 max....kronz wrote:I think i need to get into this.
What costs am i looking at fents to get it all happening.
And before anyone say's, $30 to make a brew, slabs are just as cheap, a brew consists of 23 LITRES!
Thats 54 stubbies you make per homebrew (or 25 longnecks) and roughly $1.20 per longneck. (55cents a stubbie)
Ask AgentOrange he will attest to the pleasures.

John is no longer @ Heidelberg & that store is now run by yours truly..
(Livin the dream...)
I never claim to know everything, & I'm happy to admit it & not feed bullshit to boost sales.
Don't be scared to drop by, say Hi, & have a taste or two, I dont get out much these days..
Take it sleazy..

Re: Where the BREWS!!
I'm doin pretty good, apart from 'worm related injuries' keepin me from golfing..
I was gonna retire that dance move, but after busting out to SupaFreak @ a wedding sunday & Bennet St. yesterday, I must acknowledge the joy that it brings to others & therefore must train in order to minimise the count of broken toes...
You live & learn, or in my case just live...
How bout yourself? you still in Shitney?

Re: Where the BREWS!!
nice one lindemon...so are you going to stock fresh grain, fresh hops and actually keep yeast in the fridge now?
Re: Where the BREWS!!
Yep, Best before dates checked on all products..
Unfortunately still a limited range of grain, & limited qty's, as Can & Kilo is the Co.'s main focus
Hops (plugs & pellets) are usually packaged by me on-site & are generally no more than 3months out of the vacuum pack, depends on variety & what moves..
Wyeast's dont move quickly enough to have in-store but can be ordered, But Saf yeasts live in the fridge.
Generally if we dont got it, I'll try & get it or point people in the right direction.
And the usual 'satisfaction guaranteed' applies, or is now being upheld..
But I'm not here to blog some promo, just to let people know that things have changed, hopefully, for the better..
Fents -had been wondering if you had a finger in the Kooinda pie..
It's a lovely drop, I met Mick a few months ago too..
Any idea how the B.Saaz went? It's my fav at the moment..

b.sazz (now called motueka) is ok. nothing like checz sazz tho but same with all those new NZ hops that have come across of late. mick just made a motueka and galaxy APA which he said tasted excellent out of the fermenter the other night.
i'll pop in soon to say g'day and have a drink mate.
