So I'm on my last day of a secondment as Deputy Team Leader.
I have put in an application for Team Leader as there are several vancancies in the company that I work for.
Deviant recently suggested I get my hair cut, I wasn't so sure but now I figure if I don't get the promotion I should look for another job anyway.

Should I cut my hair, or leave it be?

a hair-cut and a shave did wonders for the way managers etc treat me at work... a bit disapointing really, as I'm still exactly the same person. kind of funny, but that's the reality I guess.

I grew my hair to fit into the world of marketing a bit better, 10 years of shaved head and piggies ala DnB raver and just got too many wrongtown judgements! 'dyke' 'raver' 'freak' among the most common.

since then, I get treated differently, by all kinds of people in all kinds of ways.

the older i get, the more i believe that i wear my piercings on the inside etc, i wear way more conservative clothes now, which means I can fuck with peoples perception of me more, and if i choose to show ink, I do.

i reckon you might look dangerous with it cut off.
however - it will dry quickly after a shower, which is the best bit of short hair.

I wish we lived in a society where your haircut didn't matter to perceptions at work, but it does. That's just reality.

It doesn't matter to me personally, but I have certainly worked with lots of managers, particularly more senior or older managers, to whom it really really does.

I quizzed a senior manager on this once and his response was something like this..

"Grooming standards are important because presenting ourselves in a neat and professional manner is our way of showing respect. Respect to our clients, and respect to each other. It says "I take this seriously, and I take what you think of me seriously". To do any less is to imply that you don't take it seriously, and thats not a message that we want to send to our clients, or to each other".

Again, it doesn't bother me, but you have to admit that manager had a point.

In short, it may not guarantee a promotion, but it certainly can't hurt. In fact it shows how serious you are about the job, which may give you an edge.
