Re: Election 2010
I've never voted
Received one fine for not voting in the '06 state election. Thought this to be weird as I had no recollection of ever enrolling. I've got a sneaking suspicion that my local member did a dodgy and filled out my details on a bogus enrolment form after doorknocking my house at the time and receiving a blunt uninterested response
Found out recently that my name was stricken from the electoral roll years ago as I never updated my address (the one i never gave them to begin withlol)
Clowns the lot of em, smoke and mirrors, promises consistently reneged on etc etc
Fuck em all

Voting is gay. I didn't vote in the last one, but that aas because I got really pissed the night before and slept in until 6pm.
Still, give me someone to vote for and I will. Until then, Australian politics can eat a bag of dicks. It doesn't matter who wins, it's all the same shit.

3. I agree all parties are POO, but we got to try.....
4. Socialisim anyone?? Cause Democarcy sure as shit doesn't work....

Nothing annoys me more than people being given the opportunity to give their input, comprehensively avoid doing so, then bitch like motherfuckers that they don't like the decision
Sent in my application to vote from overseas. Fucked if I'm not having my say.

sorry, but that's bullshit, I have every right to complain..... my vote will DO NOTHING... That's my first complaint.
So you are saying that I deserve to be dictated too and accept any gov't descision that effects me wholeheartedly just cause I didn't vote... fuck that. LOL, so, a little mark on a piece of paper gives me the freedom to complain? wtf? the outcome would be EXACTLY THE SAME whether I did or didn't place that mark on that piece of paper.....

disillusioned. disenfranchised maybe but your vote does count. your apathy is what makes it so easy for politicians to take advantage. they're no different to you, they think they're doing the right thing. doesn't mean they are.

Re: Election 2010
How many eligible people in Australia would take a similar stance Dan?
I would assume a decent amount.
I'm with Alex - I think if they could consider adapting a 'we can make an impact' approach, we may see a different result
Good spiel on Polls on today show this morning aswell - V interesting to see how they come to their conclusions. Galaxy polls believe they are more accurate than book makers.

2 party systems are ghey, there's no real choice. look at the backflip labour have done back to the right over boats and mining tax. They're idiots.
Democracy needs more options to make it work IMO.

Re: Election 2010
If I really wanted to WORK to make change, I would really need to get out there and campaign and evangelise... it takes more than a few 100 people that I know to make a difference... and if I was going to do that, I may as well run and get into politics myself...... Sorry, ticking a box does not count as working together to make a change imo.
Who's to say that the dude ticking the opposite boxes to me is wrong either? See where I'm gong with this? what will be will be. If you see that as appathetic, then what can I say to change that?... probably nothing.

+1 on the political apathy being pathetic.
get involved. avoiding providing your input into the political process just leads to bad stuff (e.g. a lack of checks, balances and controls) in the political process.
voting is compulsory for australian citizens anyway.

There are plenty of avenues, take to the streets, when a council puts in plans to redevelope something you disagree with, object to the developement, GO to the council meetings etc...deviant wrote:If I really wanted to WORK to make change, I would really need to get out there and campaign and evangelise... it takes more than a few 100 people that I know to make a difference... and if I was going to do that, I may as well run and get into politics myself...... I do... and yeah the result may not always change, but change will not (Quote Pantene) happen overnight but it will happen....
Look at different grass routes organisations.
And peoples your vote is not all about you, it is to try and create a society that works for as many people as possible, it is our opportunity to help those that cannot always help themselves, it effect other people i.e a parties policy on mental health, standard health, education, welfare, more support for our Indegious People, while these do not affect me directly they are sure something that i look at when deciding who gets my vote!

the statement was directed towards people who have no intention of voting in general - not at you in particular. if you feel that you have nothing to add to the democratic process, that's your choice/prerogative.

Dan - that was not directed at you. it was directed as the whole country!!!
and YES, pretty much it has to get to the point where the things you want fixed in your apartment become SO BAD(for example) that it forces you to get on the streets and PROTEST like the cab drivers did, etc.
everyone in OZ likes to say 'that wont affect me, so im not going to learn about it"
the day will come when that apathy sees us COMPLETELY powerless to do ANYTHING to enforce change in our own country.
and yes, im a yank who is at least glad I was brought up being told from a little girl that I HAVE RIGHTS. (even if many of them involve firearms)

If every one felt there vote did not count then nothing would happen. we are extremely fortunate to even have the democratic process we have and tbh preferential voting is by far the fairest form of voting (at least we don't have the same as USA or UK).
I really hope that the greens gain the balance of power in the senate with a labour government, maybe even one in the house of reps.
