Portuguese absolutely sucks balls too... We were doing well with Spanish but it was fucking horrible when we arrived in Brasil and suddenly couldn't communicate!
Re: The Travel Thread
Going to Byron for a week at the end of this month
We've not been before. TBH we're just looking forward to doing absolutely nothing, but any recommendations and tips would be much appreciated
We're staying at Tallows Bay

crystal castle is good for hippy shit.
There is a nice waterfall up there too.
theres an old quarry just out of town you can jump off the cliffs into 30 foot of water
but the best ever is Dalwood Falls, just outside of Alstonville, about 40mins from Byron
The best river is Upper Wilsons Creek, just past Mullumbimby, 20 mins from Byron

Re: The Travel Thread
so Bali is awesome, especially if you want an actual holiday and not a massive adventure. the last time i wetn Os alone, i did 3 countries in 3 weeks!
this time i did, Gili Trawangan off lombok for diving (AMAZING and so cheap, highly reccomend!) then kuta, ubud, up north to amed and back down to kuta.
its so easy to get around, so cheap, and so set up for us tourists.
i prob would not go there on my own again, i need more adventures and locals!
but for a romantic getaway, a recoup and relax mission with friends, its fucking perfect and now i see why aussies are the majority of tourists there. Kuta is fucking awful. and dont go to Bali for shopping, the shopping is shit.
the best time i had was hooking up with some locals in the north, Amed, and was taken to villages, ate fish gutted and grilled for me on the beach, and generally did not see another western person for four days. Awesome.
Also, the way the balinese practice hinduism is truly amazing. Way more up my alley than the more rigid doctrines of indian hinduism.
im semi tanned and relaxed, but god work the day after you get back is harsh. good thing i like my job huh.
if anyone i going there i have numbers of locals who are awesome and a great tattooist, and places to stay that are truly beautiful and so so cheap. hit me up!

Re: The Travel Thread
Thanks almax and gnat for the tips, just got back from Byron
Tallows beach was grouse, good to be staying somewhere out of town. The walk from our room down to Tallows, up to the lighthouse and around the pass was epic. Insane view and we saw shitloads of whales and dolphins
Went to Nimbin for a few hours which turned out to be boring as fuck. Lol at least we can say we've been. Next time will hit up Mullumbimby for sure
Highlight for me was Island Quarry. Walked there yesterday arvo in drizzly overcast conditions. Turned out to be a longer walk than expected but well worth it. Place was deserted apart from the tripper living in a caravan near the front. The whole thing has such a quaint creepy vibe about it. Felt like we were in a scene from Return to Oz or something. I spent ages sizing up the cliffs and was pretty hesitant as there was no one else around. Jumped in the end. Total rush. Almax, did you jump off the highest one? It looked overgrown and nigh on impossible. The dude that lives where we stayed reckons someone died jumping off it

shit farken poo....
I was advised by a fellow Aussie traveler friend that I can only spend 90 days in the 'Schengen' region without a visa... this region is basically the EU with a few exceptions... I have a UK visa but this doesn't help. I thought it was 90 days in any one country... the penalty for overstaying is 5 year ban, from what I am told... stoopid lonely planet just said 90 day stay is max in ref: to country, not some region thing plus no need for visa for Aus peeps... so i followed that, never knew of this schengen thing with 90 max across all... anyone know of this stuff, i have stayed well over the 90 days...

Duuuude, you gots to stay on top of your visa situation. They even have a handy website for you: http://www.smartraveller.gov.au. Here are the Schengen rules. You can never trust a guidebook, if for no other reason that the laws change so often!quick wrote:shit farken poo....

As for what to do right now - I honestly don't know. I would seek legal advice for sure. As in, actually find an experienced Schengen immigration attorney and see if you are better off leaving straight away.

It might not be that big of a deal. The idea is that they will be able to tell you where you stand legally, which is especially important if you ever want to be able to go back. It should only be a brief consultation, so shouldn't be too exxy.quick wrote:legal advice... farken heck...
I wouldn't expect a whole lotta help from the embassy, but I guess it's worth a try...

Packing my place up this weekend, the greenback is fuqd lol poor USA.
How's the mood on the street, Dr Retz? Heard some rumblings from the Hate States/Glen Beck contingent. Massive unemployment (jobless recovery lulz), the sub-prime legal robo-signing clusterfuq, Helicopter Ben pushing for a second round of quantitative easing to assist the zombie banks, privatise wealth and socialise poverty... it's going to be an interesting time to be over there.
I'm doing some stuff on the deepwater horizon spill... will be hanging out down south for a bit... will let you know if I'm in shouting distance from Casa Del Herbie
(I get my own personal Xe guard. Let's get him smashed and dress him up in drag while he's passed out)

I found a website talking about this sort of thing recently. I read you might be able to leave them come back straight away, and that they're not that strict. Google it, it's around. I wouldn't worry too much, just leave ASAP, then maybe try and go back in and see what happens.quick wrote:shit farken poo....
