huge wrote:ive been caining pretty much any pale ale i can get my hands on lately. hawthorn pale and hargreaves hill pale still sit up the top of the list tho.

not tried the coldstream nake ale yet. i reckon the best of the mildura bunch is the storm. my local bottle-o was selling sixers of it for $13! bargain.

not a fan of the ESB either. had it quite a few times and it hasnt won me over yet.

grandridge has my favourite beer, gippsland gold. epic win.
Grand Ridge is good. Was right into their Brewer's Pilsner for a while a few years back. Their wheat is pretty good too.

Hargreaves Hill ESB rocks. Especially on tap. Passionfruit and stonefruit styles.

Haven't tried Hawthorn Pale Ale - if it's a US pale ale, I'm down. Much prefer a US than an English PA.

My last case of Creatures Pale Ale seemed to be lacking in the hop department... disappointing.

you'll fucking love hawthorn pale man. it just won all the micro brew awards i think. it's brewed under license in geelong i think but they're building a brewery somewhere

there's also a new brewery in brunswick, cant recall the name it's on barkeley st i think.

i said i think too many times just now i think.

new brewery in B'wick is called Thunder Road, they will have 20+ beers on tap i heard!

hawthorns good but not groundbreaking, will really really appeal to those who love fat yak.

grandridge? only good beer imo is the supershine barley wine 9% or 12% or something rediculous....

can i ask the grand ridge fans a question - next time you have a gippsland gold (bottle or tap but mostly bottle) does it taste like your sucking on a werthers butterscotch lolly? next time you drink it think about that whilst having your 1st and 2nd sips. if you can taste it, its called diacytel, cbf explaing you may want to goggle it.

yea alot of ppl like butterscotch and its is acceptable in some styles of beer on low levels, some ppl like it some ppl hate it, im a hater. They can fix it but they are either just to lazy or dont have the knowledge. And its not just the gippsland gold, its in most of their beers and yet they still keep winning awards every year !

As you'd know, some brewers deliberately set out to get dicetyl is their beers... not saying they are, particularly if its in all their beers*

*it certainly isn't in their wheat beer

I would have thought you would have liked their pilsner mate? It's a true Czech style, and I know you like Urquell. I found it (Brewers Pilsner) to be a very interesting beer.

Will have to try Hawthorn, thanks for the heads up Huge.

Their ciders are a bit on the sweet side for me. Some ciders to try:

Pipsqueek (Lil Creatures)
Magners (Irish)
Monteiths (NZ)
2Brothers Gypsy (VIC)
Coldstream Cider (Nice and strong)
Old Mout ( Nelson NZ, they do a great scrumpy and boysenberry cider too) http://www.oldmout.co.nz/

Shouldnt have too much trouble finding Monteiths. It's prob one of the most readily available ciders in Melbs, in bars and in wholesalers.

Cider is indeed the new black. Seems as though everyone's been hitting it hard for the last year or two

IMO Pipsqueak is bloody horrid. Monteith's is nice though quite sweet. Prefer Bulmers to Magners I think. Merc isn't bad from what I remember, but have only had when waztord

I'm drinking Hoegaarden as i write this. Not as good as I remember. Craving a good new beer ATM........have been digging porters and stouts, but need something summery

There is quite a big difference:

Bulmers is brewed in Australia.

Magners is brewed in Tipperary (Ireland) and imported.

Magners is the authentic stuff and tastes much better in my opinion. You will also note it is more expensive. As mentioned before, the Bulmers Pear is rather average and the Magners Pear is much better.

Rekorderlig is a bit too much like slapperjuice/lolly water for me....but if that's your thing... way too sweet for me. You can get the Rekorderlig , pear, strawberry and lime here too. The belgium beer cafe sells it.

they do have the best cider, drinking Kapparberg Pear now, most refreshing alcoholic drink EVER!!! perfect for this annoying hangover I have, need to get over it, flying to Bangkok in a few hours ;)

We will find some good stuff when I get back Hughbert... Rekorderling is not as good and is more lolly water tasting for sure...

Went out to Holgate Brewery in Woodend the other wekend for lunch. I love so many of their beers. The food wasn't a good as Coldstream or Red Hill Breweries though.
These three Holgate beers are absolutely amazing:

Holgate ESB
Holgate Temptress Porter
Holgate Nut Brown Ale

Have done a few brews myself lately. A few weeks ago I did an American Pale ale with cacade, amarillo and the intensely bitter Nelson Sauvin (NZ) hops.

Have taken the next step in brewing and did my first full grain brew on Sunday. Full grain brewing is essentially brewing from scratch with water, malted barley and hops. I brewed another pale ale and managed to get hold of some whole NZ Cascade hop flowers which will hopefully make this a fantastic beer. I am slowly but surely becoming obsessed with beer and brewing.... Maybe we should start a homebrew thread or is there already one? :kooislayer.:

Anyone tried Dos Blockos Pale Lager yet? It's pretty tasty. Summery and light but still with fruity flavours. Kinda like Fat Yak mated with Corona or something. And each stubby comes in a brown paper bag so you can look like a bum while drinking it :) No idea where else they stock it but we just got them in in our bar and i've drank a few and am liking them ;)

The brown paper bag is meant to be all about the NYC squat theme. It does actually serve as a half decent stubby cooler when ur drinking it in the sun. Where'd you try it?

Tried a Moo Brew (Tas) Dark Ale last night. It was absolutely beautiful. Also had a Schöfferhofer Kristallweizen (German Weiss beer) which was awesome too. Will definitely be drinking a few more of those.
Celebrating my 30th at Beer Deluxe today so will be giving their beer menu a good thrashing. I'm sure to uncover some new favourite beers!
