for some reason i couldnt stop thinking about this yesterday after work. and so i compiled my super duper top 5.
1. the league of gentlemen
2. twin peaks
3. blackadder
4. monty pythons flying circus
5. black books
red dwarf is bumped due to the crappy american version , the movie that never came out and the fact the hot kochanski from seasons 7 -8 never got naked.

The Late Show rocked, I got Bargearse on vid... so many good calls in that flick.
Fawlty Towers is genious, not a fan of Monty Python tho... too obvious and slap stick.
English humer is best when its smart, not stupid obvious slapstick, I hate that shit.

stupid obvious slapstick is GOLD, as long as it is delivered by someone with incredible comedic timing. Egs?quick wrote:The Late Show rocked, I got Bargearse on vid... so many good calls in that flick.

Screw slapstick, I want my comedy sutble or genious. I cringe at slapstick now... dunno why, I used to love it(when I was a kid, Goodies etc), then I grew out of it.mrj wrote:stupid obvious slapstick is GOLD, as long as it is delivered by someone with incredible comedic timing. Disagree. Why does everything in life have to be so complicated ALL THE TIME. I hate it when I realise there is humour I am not understanding because I don't have a Masters in Quantum Mechanics or intimate knowledge of the breeding habits of Lithuanian hunting Turkeys.quick wrote:Screw slapstick, I want my comedy sutble or genious. Sometimes simple pleasures are the best, you don't have to think too much and everyone can share it.

I like my humour both ways, as much as I appreciate really subtle, clever humour (eg a lot of british comedy), I still vastly enjoy a bit of slapstick.
Movies like Dodgeball make me laugh no matter how many times I watch it, there's absolutely nothing wrong with getting in touch with your inner child and laughing when a wrench hits a guy in the face or a morbidly obese cheerleader vaginally swallows an unsuspecting male cheer squad member's head...

soooo true! i love both really, but i just can't go passed a good fart joke or something falling out of tree or getting accidentally wacked in the face with a cricket bat makes me laugh just thinking about it!mrj wrote:Agreed! Could never really get into Curb Your Enthusiasm... Always seemed like a more deadpan version of Seinfeld, with only one main character to focus your hatred upon. I am well aware that the guy used to write for Seinfeld.
Oh one more... Eat Carpet for whenever I'm home saturday nites. And At the Movies with Margeret and David.

Subtle humour at its best, and the story lines are enjoyeable... liked it the first time i watched it... loved it the second time through... gets funnier and funnier.mecka wrote:Could never really get into Curb Your Enthusiasm...
