Its been interesting reading it a bit, same as reading "right wing" economists. its been good to challange my existing views on things, and also to see the kind of range of views people have. I am certainly less worked up now by rabid right-wing stuff and get why people have these differnt opinions. Also, it it good to understand where the arguments fall over, are superficial etc.

I sincerely hope you are right. Pigs act as a mixing pot for influenza, and there is genuine concern that if this strain (A/H1N1) infects either a pig or a human who has the H5N1 viral strain, 2/3rds of the planet could be wiped out within months (and the people with healthy immune systems will be the ones who cop it).

I'm keeping one eye on the World Health Organisation to watch the evolution of the outbreak. There will be some tabloid sensationalism, but you can usually depend on the WHO to cut through the bullshit. The next three-four days are critical... we will have a much better understanding of the pathogenicity and probability of cytokine storms with this virus. At the moment it looks highly virulent, and Avian influenza is currently killing people in Egypt. Fingers crossed that they don't cross paths.

j/k I'm sure it is potentially serious Cia, but in the UK we were bombarded with front page scare stories about avian flu for nearly a year. a whole fucking year! LOL

no epidemic, so why scare everyone? do you see what I mean? it was sensationalised in the extreme by the media and I'm naturally rather dubious.

The good thing about mass media coverage is that hopefully EVERYONE who has returned from Mexico and the US will now be aware of symptoms to look out for, along with the general population.

Good way to stop further spreading of a potentially disasterous lethal virus.

People should be scared imo....

Influenza has wiped out millions of people before and has the potential to do it again, no matter how prepared we are. The virus has mutated 100s or even 1000s of times since it was first discovered.

Death from influenza (read: cytokine storm) is fucking horrible... sub-20 year olds and over 40s are usually OK... 20 and 30 somethings are the ones who get fucked on. Basically your own immune system kills you, and it's at it's most developed between 20 and 40 years of age.... Nasty nasty nasty.

Yeah, I see where you are coming from. Avian Flu sat at phase 3 for ages and nothing came of it because it had limited to zero human-human transmission. To catch it from someone you would have to cut them open and lick their lungs (gross but true).

WHO has ramped up to Phase 4
The Emergency Committee, established in compliance with the International Health Regulations (2005), held its second meeting on 27 April 2009.

The Committee considered available data on confirmed outbreaks of A/H1N1 swine influenza in the United States of America, Mexico, and Canada. The Committee also considered reports of possible spread to additional countries.

Swine influenza

Current WHO phase of pandemic alert

International Health Regulations (IHR)

On the advice of the Committee, the WHO Director-General decided on the following.

The Director-General has raised the level of influenza pandemic alert from the current phase 3 to phase 4.

The change to a higher phase of pandemic alert indicates that the likelihood of a pandemic has increased, but not that a pandemic is inevitable.

As further information becomes available, WHO may decide to either revert to phase 3 or raise the level of alert to another phase.

This decision was based primarily on epidemiological data demonstrating human-to-human transmission and the ability of the virus to cause community-level outbreaks.

Given the widespread presence of the virus, the Director-General considered that containment of the outbreak is not feasible. The current focus should be on mitigation measures.

The Director-General recommended not to close borders and not to restrict international travel. It was considered prudent for people who are ill to delay international travel and for people developing symptoms following international travel to seek medical attention.

The Director-General considered that production of seasonal influenza vaccine should continue at this time, subject to re-evaluation as the situation evolves. WHO will facilitate the process needed to develop a vaccine effective against A/H1N1 virus.

The Director-General stressed that all measures should conform with the purpose and scope of the International Health Regulations.

I think if its caught early enough the prognosis is pretty good regardless of age.

The cytokine storm you describe only occurs in the later stages of the disease, and is preventable with various medicine including tamiflu and corticosteroids.

Don't know if the A/H1N1 strain of flu is deadly atm. Looks like some people are falling off the perch because of pneumonia... whether this is a secondary infection or blood filling the lungs after immune system threw mad rave is anyone's guess. Recombinant virus strains are currently the biggest concern, as the A/H1N1 is a hodge-podge of avian, porcine and human flu viruses and it could very easily mutate into something approaching 12 monkeys-style future, complete with mad stencil art.

The awesome thing about the evolution of disease is that a sucessful virus won't kill its host quickly. This is why 'catch it and bleed-to-death' diseases like Ebola tend to burn out after a short period of time. There is a tendency with disease for the less destructive and more contagious strains to pass on to more hosts and be more evolutionarily fit, so even if the faecal matter hits the spinning blade we may end up with a less deadly disease in a year or two.

An influenza pandemic occurs when a new influenza virus appears against which the human population has no immunity, resulting in epidemics worldwide with enormous numbers of deaths and illness. With the increase in global transport, as well as urbanization and overcrowded conditions, epidemics due the new influenza virus are likely to quickly take hold around the world.

Outbreaks of influenza in animals, especially when happening simultaneously with annual outbreaks of seasonal influenza in humans, increase the chances of a pandemic, through the merging of animal and human influenza viruses. During the last few years, the world has faced several threats with pandemic potential, making the occurrence of the next pandemic a matter of time.

Consequences of an influenza pandemic

In the past, influenza pandemics have resulted in increased morbidity and mortality and great social disruption. In the 20th century, the most severe influenza pandemic occurred in 1918 -1919 and caused an estimated 40–50 million deaths world wide. Current epidemiological models project that a pandemic could result in 2 to 7.4 million deaths globally.

If an influenza pandemic were to occur today, we could expect:

the pandemic virus to spread rapidly due to the high level of global traffic;
vaccines, antiviral agents and antibiotics to treat secondary infections to be in short supply, with a period of several months before any vaccine becomes available;
medical facilities to be overwhelmed with demands to care for both influenza and non-influenza patients;
widespread illness to result in sudden and potentially significant shortages of personnel to provide essential community services.
Also, when armageddon comes, stick with the dog.
