I think we may have cracked a real hidden truth here.
Nerd is sitting at home (I'm assuming that Tom character). Tom is wondering how to get more (or at least some) young booty. Tom invents social networking internet site that requires a computer science degree to operate, and voila! Tom has invented a market whereby sexual favours can be exchanged for internerd knowledge.
He's climbing in your windows, he's snatching your people up.

well he is but a marketing guy now, but are you sure he didnt start it up, then have Fox buy it off him for some riddiculous amount? if fact im pretty sure Tom is now just an enigma and has nothing to do with it except maybe a few appearances here and there, shep, whats the real deal here?
that article is questionable system ... a lot of way off conclusions.
i like how it says that myspace was built for advertising - it strikes me as odd as someone who has worked on just that at myspace that the site is an absolute nightmare to try and monetise.
"Essentially, MySpace users are filling out marketing profiles that are mined by the company that are then presented as these people's personal Web pages"
um - this is the case with EVERY REGISTERED property ... ie Hotmail, gmail, Y! mail, NY Times, wsj.com etc etc ... I love it how the article makes it all sound so sinister - MEDIA is and always has been based around demo profiling and advertising! Yes myspace has those features but this only gets you so far.
tom doesn't have much to do with marketing at FIM - that is a guy called Shaun Gold ... Tom is more a 'face' of the site and kind of serves as the ambassador of what myspace is all about - ie music etc ... he does have input into features but he is not the guy coding it.

yeah sorry, this one is a lot better. (geek tech details warning.) the previous one was a bit off base.
the popularity of myspace, as alluded to in the baseline mag article, is just timing. if friendster (which myspace followed closely as a model) had positioned itself better, it could have exploded in new memberships instead.
the thing about myspace that has always mazed me is the enduring popularity. the site falls over every time i have used it, but people stick with it. an intriguing contemporary phenomena, for the user loyalty alone.

not that intriguing imo. people are loyal to their friends, not to the systems, and inertia is a powerful thing.

it's like when people flock to a sub standard local pub, just because you know the people drinking in there etc.
Does anyone else fill in false marketing information??
Sometimes I am a 45 year-old male golfer who enjoys sailing my yatch from Florida to the bahamas with my boyfriend. Other times I am a 65 year old lady with 15 cats.
Pseudonyms and false info the whole way.
I wanted to be a hero. I wanted to be the center of attention. I wanted the glory, I wanted the fame. I wanted the pretty girls to come up and say, "Hi, I see that you're good at Centipede."

i think it was because there was no alternative. people put up with IE until Firefox really broke through ... I think ppl dealt with mysapce always having errors and crashing because it was really the only way to network in that way. people will put up with rubbish in all elements of life if there isn't a better alternative!

A good part of my success in melbourne has been through social networking sites, don't knock them. I want to have a personal chat with a touring artist, I can break the ice through there, then hang with them when they come to town. I need a particular component or skill for a project, I find them on there. Yes real life is good for that some of the time, but why not consider all the options? Balance is good, and use all the resources available to you.
