Contemplating getting off road with some mates and will need to buy a new bike.

So i had a pretty cool BMX a few years ago and it got knicked, lock cut straight through (and it was a decent lock but no D lock)
Ive also heard that D locks can be bent open using a hydrolic jack, are there many reports of all these pretty bikes getting stolen?
'Cause ever since i have been cautious of buying a pretty bike for fear of heartache and angst again. I just bought a second hand mountain bike and its pretty ugly, considering whether i could pretty it up.

a good thing to consider when 'prettying up' a cheap bike is whether or not the cost of said prettying up is disproportionate to the cost of the actual bike itself

a nice trick paint job will (generally) set you back a few hundred bucks.......your average aluminium mtb frame is worth arguably less than that

that said though, i have a 7005 apollo mtb frame that i wanna get painted up........it's a big ungainly heavy thing, but the fit is perfect, it's served me well for 3yrs and i intend to continue riding it forever.......reason enough for me to wanna pretty it up........not sure when it'll actually happen though, as i've got about a trillion dollars worth of bicycle related wish list atm. lol

or
for a cheaper option, look at powder coating, alot of places have some pretty cool colours

I wouldnt bother getting a lock other than kryptonite evolution or something rated for high crime.

i reckon professional thieves, pretty much the only ones capable of braking a lock out the front of RMIT during the day without getting noticed, know what they're looking for. if you strip the bike of branding, repaint etc then they might not recognize them.

yeah they know what they are looking for, but thats my point, how soon before they catch on to this whole fixie craze and start stealing them?
And thats also what im asking, has it already started?
I mean, with these fixies they are very interchangable are they not? so they could steal one bike, pull it apart and put it back together again with parts from 4 other bikes so it looks completely different.

i could be wrong, but tbh i don't think these guys think about it that much

they aren't cycling nuts......if they were they wouldn't steal other cycling nut's bikes

imo they steal then sell asap to make some quick coin, in most cases the bike is probably never pulled apart.......on the off chance it is ever turned up, it probably looks as it was when it was stolen

like i said, i could be wrong.......people's thoughts?

they'd kill themselves trying to ride off with it huhu.

they have started stealing cranks, pedal, seats, wheels. some dudes i know have about $2k worth of gear just in wheels and cranks. all you need to steal the wheels is a 15mm spanner. a brooks titanium saddle is worth $400+. just a 5mm hex key.

i would never be able to leave the bike locked up in the street, too paranoid.
Its nice to have an average looking bike for that reason.
Someone should leave a dummy bike for bait and wait with some lead piping till someone tries to nick it.

exactly what i wanted to do a couple of years back when i had 3 bikes flogged. 2 from RMIT within 2 weeks of each other.

setup a sting, bait bike, cameras, dudes in cars ready for the chase. vigilante justice. couldnt find anyone to help lol.

i am imagining a fairly established and well run racket. dudes scope the racks for nice popular bikes with no u-locks. walk up, put backback down next to it, cut helmet off, put helmet on, grab cutters/liquid nitrogen, hammer/whatever, brake lock put it in backpack with tool, ride off to the van around the corner. repeat.

if you're doing even just 1 bike a day you're making a fucking heap of money.

You should design one that can be inserted into the hollow of the frame, with a discreet wire sticking out for antenae, then have blue tooth out to device so you can set it up on a computer.

haha tbh i don't think there's any such thing as building up to it. feels totally foreign the first few times

maybe get huge to give it a flip-flop hub? that way you can easily switch back if/when it gives you the shits

edit- i guess one way to sort of work up to it would be getting used to riding with straps or some sort of pedal retention

yeah, I hear ya. I just want to get my general fitness good, and also my traffic riding skills up to scratch first before attempting it. I've been trying to keep the pedals spinning at all times, even downhill and when braking, just to get used to the constant rotation.

rode from nth melb (almost flemington/kensington) to smith st last night, then rode from Thornbury back to nth melb today. Was totally awesome fun, and much faster than PT, or even car at some points. I reckon I passed over 50 cars riding down High St and two trams.

oh btw: there's already a flip-flop hub on it

Hey guys

I'm looking to get a reliable commuter bike that'll get me to and from work/uni in the inner city. Thinking a flat bar road bike, either single speed (free wheel only) or with gears, I imagine it'd probably be something like an old bike that someone's done up a bit. Not looking to spend too much, pref less than $200 for the bike but might go more if it's a doozy.

I'm 5ft10, so something that would suit my height..

If anyone here has anything for sale, or has any recommendations, please reply here or PM me.

Also, I'm trying to decide which would be better; single speed or multi-geared... I've never had a single speed, but would really like something as simple as possible. I kinda ended up just using one or two gears on my mountain bike anyway.. What are some pros and cons that I should consider?

You just gonna be using it for short trips around town (no hills)? If so single speed might be the go. Less maintenance and lighter. That said, a geared drivetrain is pretty bloody simple to maintain. Wipe the chain down and give it a lube every couple of weeks and you'll be laughing

Unless you're super keen and fit, a single speed is practically useless for trips longer than 10 or 15km. You'll either end up spinning too fast on the flat or having to walk up hills. Neither of these situations are fun

Keep your eyes peeled on gumtree/BNA etc, shouldn't take long to find something
