This “how would you feel if strangers jumped your fence” argument is the oldest bit of bullshit in the xenophobe’s book. But the metaphor doesn’t stick, derFRED, because there’s a non-too-subtle difference between your house and the enormous landmass on which it sits, namely: you do not own this country. Not like you may own your house, you don’t. Many lightweight thinkers actually believe they do, because they pay their taxes and thus feel they’ve purchased into some kind of Godship over everything that happens within an entire 7686850 square kilometres of the planet, but all they’ve really bought with their money is a “get out of jail free” card in a cheap political numbers game designed by ancient feudal bullies – a system that is increasingly failing to accommodate the rapid advancements in human knowledge, intelligence and readiness for compassion. The fields and rock formations of this continent cannot possibly be compared to the decorations of your living room, derFRED, which you purchased from Freedom Furniture or wherever, and nor do you have a receipt for its animals and plants, as you may do for the food in your fridge - they exist autonomous of your puny measure of control, were here long before your pimply arse scored its first credit card, and will be here for millions of years after all of our descendants and the silly lines we draw on our sketches of the world have been completely forgotten. You might just as well ask what I’d do if my ceiling started to leak, as a metaphor in an argument about weather control. A house is a commodity, framed and finite, free to be bought, sold or wrecked by its owner. But no bastard so owns this earth on which we walk, derFRED, and nobody owns Australia; not you, not Julia Gillard, not the f***ing Queen, not even the Aborigines - the so-called “original” owners - as their legendary powerlessness against “boat people” will attest. Those who can creatively view a sustainable future – and I’m talking to the next 1000 years, derFRED, not just the next Federal f***ing election – do not see a world merrily divided by tighter frontiers of demarcation guarded by increasingly rapacious political and racial tribalism, but a humanity somewhat more united in its effort to remain in existence. It’s idealistic, for sure, but that’s no reason to abandon the pursuit of it in favour of small-minded, short-sighted, self-serving avarice, which is exactly what your chant of “enough is enough” is all about, and nothing more. Having said all of that, if a family were to jump my fence and ask for charity, I’d like to believe I’d do my very best to help them out - if nothing else, you never know when you might be asking for charity yourself. You with me?
