Is my boss spying on me?

Post by almax »

I have heard that some bosses have a program that allows them to watch what you are doing on your computer from affar, there is also a way to tell whether they are i believe.
Yesterday i got given a brand new computer which is all good, but i have a job interview tomorrow and i was doing some research just now, looking at the companies website and the email i was sent confirming the interview.
My Boss strolls up, she hardly ever speaks with me, and sends me scrambling trying to cover the website (thank fuck for alt tab) and she makes some idle chit chat, then asks me if i would like a promotion. Bit strange since ive been slacking off in recent weeks cos im over it.
So anywho, my question is....

Can you tell if your boss is spying on you and how?

get peer guardian, it will show you ip addresses trying to access your computer.

if your work has a local "tracker" - then you know.....

neither peer guardian nor a vpn will influence it, really. if you browse through a proxy (which you very probably do), then everything is logged anyway. so it's just a matter of whether or not they bother looking at the logs.

it will be easier to view the logs if there is a VPN. I suggest you remote to your home PC or bypass the proxy.

*shrug*, you can look at the logs realtime and work it out. if they're trying to actually screenscrape your session, then yes, peerguardian will be of some help, but that means they'll see that too. :)

er, really, if there's a proxy, then it logs. and the logs will be right there for the it dept to look at. vpn only makes a difference if you're logged into your work network remotely, in which case it's the difference between proxy and no proxy anyway. tunneling to your home pc is an option if it works, but usually bypassing the proxy without some kind of tunnel just doesn't work.

Yeah, I remote into our work network which is such a draining experience.
Remoting into my home PC is the only way I seem to be able to avoid my boss. But dont ask me, what would I know, I'm just a girl

Yes, prob with a prog like PC Anywhere.
Used to use it with clients for work. Great Prog !!

Can't remember if the end user could see you, look in your icon tray for a remote based icon.

This was 4 years ago thou, I'm sure there are all sorts of mad snooping prog's these days. Gaylords.

realvnc, free and easy

its not really covert though as you can see when someone is on your comp cause the utiliy icon goes dark, only see that if you look for it though

its more useful for operating comps without screens

I think most IT departments worth the oxygen they breathe will have this kind of software (remote access + surveillance) installed on all the work machines anyway to make their tech support easier. It wouldn't be a stretch to imagine the boss requests the IT department install the same monitoring software on their machine to easily check what people are doing. If they know it's possible at all. :D

On a serious note though, My work has Radmin Viewer. They can log in and see whats on your screen in real time or they can log in and use your PC and take over your mouse.
Theres a blue R on the Tool bar and it changes to red when they are remote monitoring.

Yup, we had that stuff at HT. If you had a problem with your mouse moving all funny you knew it was cause some fucktard in It was shadowing your work.

Almax, considering your boss didn't come up and say get the fuck out and actually offered you a promotion, I'd say you're in a good position

You're not bypassing the proxy, just encapsulating/encrypting your payload (fucking nerd terms) before it hits it. Which has the same effect I guess. Your boss will be able to track usage, just not make sense of it.

There are lots of VPN architectures and protocols that can be used - some will allow you to do this others won't, and to varying degrees of confidentiality.

Anyway, back to the original question. If you are connected to any sort of *nix server anyone with access to it can easily capture every single packet that goes in and out of the thing in real time. There is an API built into the kernel just for doing that...

It's a little harder in a doze environment, but can also be done.

You wouldn't need anything installed on the client to snoop Internet traffic on a corporate internal network. Just something between it and the WAN connection. You won't know. Just assume your boss is.
First you get her name. Then you get her number. Then you get some get some in the back seat of a hummer!

Can you tell if your boss is spying on you and how?
Al..... didn't you think for a second to ask the guy who works in the same
company as you... As an IT tech? Short answer, yes we do use VNC and
other remote assistance apps.

Is she spying on you? Doubt it, not by any technical means anyway. If
anything she is looking over your shoulder.

Any Team leader/project manager that needs to have shit installed
needs to go through the help desk. They are really strict about giving
users admin rights (which they would require to install the client to view
your PC) also they would have to be a member of a security group we
maintain that would allow them to use the VNC or Remote Assistance.

If a user comes up asking for VNC access we ask a LOT of questions.

It's not something that a typical user would need or require and the only
ones that do have and use it are the @Home guys to assist their agents
working at home.

Hope that answers your question.

Here where I work we have access to a program that can tell us what sites a user has visited including google searches, How long they have had applications open for and what times of the day and pretty much any info you can think of. Do we use it to spy on people....no not at all.

I.T will only check someones logs etc if they have done something extremely bad and need some evidence to sack them or give warnings....So just relax and don't surf porn sites. :)

isnt it kind of illegal to spy on people anyway?

we can do it with Apple Remote Desktop, VNC (vnc is highly vulnerable and you should really not use it if you are opening it up to the internets) and Zenworks. Also we have reporting software and auditing software that runs everyday much like Diode up thurr does.
