Being new to Oz, I had a hard time finding an internet provider that didn't want to do a credit check (as I have none here yet) - I'm with "Unwired" which is pretty good and I bought my modem on ebay for half the price they sell them for (and a big haha to unwired)

What I want to know is, how do you guys get around these ridiculous bandwidth limits without blowing your budget?

Unwired offers a 8gb limit ofr $50/month. But I download a lot of stuff, music, movies etc, and would go through 8gb in a week easily.. So what do I do? I can't do a long contract as I'm not 100% on my length of stay here, and no credit. I think I'm screwed until I can get some credit. 8gb is nothing though! Especially as I'm always uploading and downloading stuff from my website, ugh!

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

we have TPG which is $69 per month and 150gig limit. 40 gig is peak time the rest you have to use between 1am-6am or something like that

i also have this robot that does my laundry and dry cleaning!

not quite as good as japan, but i have 24/1 adsl2+ for €50/mo here, no data limits, no capping, etc.

Naked iiNet here. Nice. ADSL2+, $89, 30gb/60gb.

They include upload data in your quota with naked though, yeah?

If memory serves me correctly, that was the only thing that stopped me getting naked. (I'm sure you're all breathing a sigh of relief..)

i almost got conned for this when i was signing up.. they sneakingly hid "uploads" at the end of the page

speeds are good 1.7-2MB/s bit pricey tho

tpg is great.... the only reason I'm not with them now is coz I moved house and they don't service my new joint. iinet are good although their customer service bites arse.

if you sign with iiNet (and most others I'm sure) they usually supply you with an ADSL modem, this will not let you sit on teh couch and talk on mb.c without any wires attatched to your lappy.

You can upgrade to a wireless router/modem for an extra cost.

If you already have the modem, but not the router you can just buy one and hook it up to your existing modem.

One thing to think of is that if your modem is not in the list of their 'preferred modems' you'll have trouble getting support when something goes wrong.

Ah Okies, our lappy has a built in wireless modem, but yeah we don't have a router, we have the modem we got from Telstra, we just are sick of paying through the nose for crap that is the Big T..

you'll need all 3...

1. a Modem to connect to the intermawebs
2. a Wireless Router to send the signal from the modem
3. a Wireless card in the lappy to receive the routers signal


you can cut it down to 2 if you get a combined modem/router

ah shanks mate.... Okies, might keep looking, wireless is a MUST.... Am sick of cords everywhere. We were looking at the iiNet $79.95 a month

theres a good wireless router and modem all in one for $129.00 atm.. Can't remember make or model tho..

Ah, I haven't posted on this thread for a while..

So I was on "Unwired" which gave me 8gb wireless adsl for like $75 a month, which sucked.

My area doesn't allow adsl2, which also sucks.

But I found TPG has the best deal for regular adsl, 18gb, 10 peak 8 off peak, 1500, for $50/month, their customer service has been great so far as well.
No credit check and 6 month contract (for an extra $50 or so, not too bad)

Anyways, I'm really happy with tpg so far

We are getting screwed by Telstra, they are saying we have uesd almost 25 gig in 20 days! And we are just not on the net at home that much let alone download that much!

What counts as a download - or at least what takes from your gig?

both upload and download would likely count.

Short answer: Everything.

Every webpage you visit, file you download, stream you listen to, image you view.

If you've got a wireless setup at home I would check for someone hacking your network.
WEP encryption can be hacked in 30 secs with or without SSID hidden.

optus can suck my big black dick, just for the record.

iinet has the home deal with free local and interste calls, no line rental and 35mg for $70 per month.
but you need VIOP enabled modem, of which i have two modems and neitehr will work.

they said $150 join fee, plus $100 for VIOP adapter for my current netgear modem...
i cant seem to get a vIOP from dick smith or officeworks, said its new technology...

anyone got VOIP for phone and innernet?
is this technology gonna take off or are we going to hear the sob stories soon?
any other tips on the package idea?

this technology (routing voice calls over packet switched networks, i.e. the internet) has been around for ~25 years - all that's happening now is that end users are able to use the technology directly to save money. you need to have an internet connection to use voip services, aka internet calls.

iiNet supplied me with the Modem & VOIP 'voice-box', I bought teh Wireless Router myself

you can definitely get a VOIP box at Officeworks, I've seen them. I think they have Engin branded ones from memory.

Voice box plugs into the Modem and you can plug any phone into the back of the voice box and VOILA

hmmm, talked to officeworks, they seemed to not know what the hell i was talking bout...

i gots wireless router already, so just need teh VIOP box, any idea how much it was brb?
