Cd production for unsigned band, help!
im just wondering, if we are about to produce a slick a CD, with a view to get it in shops as well as sell at gigs etc, do we need to include a barcode on the design for ease of selling in said shops?
Is this a standard thing, and if so, surely you cant just whack any barcode on there?
We are not signed at this point, and im new at this side of things...
Anyone know anything bout that, either from label side or retailers side?
halp!

I'd reckon retailers would like a barcode for scanning purposes. And if this is the case, you'd need a specific barcode that identifies the product - but I don't know how you get them.
But I'd also think most retailers, and definately all major retailers won't accept the CD unless you hook up with a distributor.
Sony/BMG put out a 'music industry bible' of sorts once a year... it contains contacts from labels, distributors, promoters, managers etc. I have one at home. They're cheap and can be ordered online - they also contain lots of useful info for getting product out there, I'd recommend checking it out Kitty.

Coolio homegirl.
I'll try to remember to have a look at mine tonight and find you an address to track 'em down - I ordered mine online a couple of years ago. Fairly cheap too I think.

Barcoding is essential for retail
from memory you need to register said barcode with a barcode group/body/company that then approves the use of said barcode through scanning machines.
there may even be software available so you can generate your own
we used to do it at my old work - will see if I can find out some info

Hey Bo,
You need a UPC (Universal Product Code) for any release. CD or not.
You can then get a barcode.
Your distro will hook you up with a barcode.
There are a handful in Aus that take unsigned bands without a label. (the band becomes their own label)
Inertia and MGM are the most popular.
We can chat about it at BassCamp 2m.
peace.
