Unless you're super keen and fit, a single speed is practically useless for trips longer than 10 or 15km. You'll either end up spinning too fast on the flat or having to walk up hills. Neither of these situations are fun

Keep your eyes peeled on gumtree/BNA etc, shouldn't take long to find something

Hey awesome Thanks for the heads up. Yep, just short trips around town, maybe the odd hill but primarily inner city flats. I pretty much never do long bike rides, so that solidifies my choice. I haven't been in Melbourne for quite a while, what's the bike theft situation here like? Is it necessary to go for a beater if it's gonna be at uni and outside when I'm at the pub etc? (been in the Netherlands where everyone rides a serious beater for their get around bike). Also, is ebay worth looking at?

That's the one I use. No lock is totally arsehole proof, but that brand is pretty well known. If you want some added security on top of that you could use a cable to secure any quick release parts (wheels etc). Kryptonite makes those too

Not too sure about good places to buy second hand, as I've never done it. I know there's a place in Moorabbin called Bicycle Recycle. Mate of mine picked up a good bike there for his missus and said they had a bunch of nice stuff. Obviously the advantage of doing it that way is that they've all been serviced and had broken parts replaced, which is handy if you're a noob and don't know what to look for

People often mention CERES in Brunswick too. Don't know much about it but I've got a feeling it might be more of a parts swap shop than a second hand dealer. Might be worth checking out

i've had one of these for years, mainly because i find d/u-locks a bit of a pain to carry.



while you should always lock your bike up, melbourne is hardly nyc.

good for a commuter style of bike.

ive got got the small abus d lock (about the same as the kryptonite mini). they arent cheap but they're easy to carry in your belt!

hub gears are a nice concept but in reality dont really work that well, mainly due to heat.

Been into the idea of bike touring for a while, so figured Melb to Sydney was a logical choice for a first crack at it. Have just about figured out which route I'll take. There's a mob in Sydney who make awesome hard travel cases for bikes so at this stage I'm thinking I might ride up, buy one, pack my bike into it and fly back

No idea when I'll be doing it yet. Seriously lacking in fitness atm due to injury woes but should be back on the bike v soon. After that I guess it's just a matter of getting some kms back into the legs and getting the time off work
