Big Day Out wrap-up

Post by Will »

So? How was it?

Who checked Concord Dawn? Did it go off?

Is RJD2 worth checking out?

Was Kid Koala as big a wanker as people said?

Did anyone see a 12-year-old OD?

Was cool, Leroy was alright (dude from Prodigy), Streets were ridiculosly packed, as was Hilltop Hoods, Kid Koala I missed, and I was working during CCD, but I got told they were both pretty impressive. P.Money w/ Scrib was alright, but way too many people there, the biggest in AUS yet they reckon.

Cox sounded quite good from what I heard, which was only a little.

I heard 2 tracks, one with a sick dark synth in it, that always gets me, and the other was a not too cheesy hard remix of Eurythmycs - Sweet Dreams. Sound quite cool too, but not cool enough to keep me at the tent.

it was probably Stamina MC who was, to my surprise, at the operatives gig at platform 1 on Friday night, they kinda look similar if you're in a dark nightclub, they both be black and heavy set

My quick wrap...

- Decoder Ring, amazing but boiler room was not the best place for them

- Concord Dawn, mad... but the sound was too low... they were not happy, storming up to the sound guy.. pleading he turn it up... fucked!

- The Music, wicked!

- Le Tigra - my pick of the day.... these girls & guy are sooo talented its not funny... had a fucken ball...

- Kid Koala, only caught the last 15 mins.. sounded dope, he had the room jumping

- B. Boys, {instert moistness}.... i stood there with my mouth open gasping for air the whole time

- Polyphonic Spree - a trip & vision... wish i could have hung around longer

- Scribe & P. Money - better than i expected... they sure are showmen... never seen the boiler room that packed so early

- The Streets - stupid choice putting them on the RRR stage... there were people ccueing up all along the hot house trying to see/hear them.... i gave up after 10 mins, but what i heard was dope

- Freestylers, zzzzzzz boring....{ducks for cover}.. even bring the first behind the fence in centre couldn't stop me from walking out after 15 mins... the beer tent was calling

The Chemical Brothers - the set had its moments of finery... but in all was pretty chilled... the lightening was awesome... was great to easily navigate up to the front of the bolider room so late in the day

I have to say that i was worried with BDO being a sell out that it would be squashy as all hell in there... but was surprised to find this to be one of the best BDO crowds i have been in yet. loads of very friendly  people.

Good to see ya Steve, Hans, Alisha, Ollie, Susan, ... sorry i missed ya Fents, Gary and Lucas..

Now i must go back to working on recovering my soul... good night all

Crap just posted my thoughts in the other thread.

Anyways.

Weather - The weather was spectacular not a cloud in the sky for a majority of the day. Good temperature if you kept hydrated.

People - Plenty of good lookin ones around.

Bands -
The Donnas - disappointing as they played pretty much a staightforward set with no real embellishment. Sounded exactly the same as on their albums.

Concord Dawn - Awesome. Agree wid Fi on the sound levels tho.

Scribe - meh. I can't really get into him on CD, radio or live.

Hilltop Hoods - stark contrast. They were really good but I ended up outside for half their set because of the heat and crowding.

The Streets - Had most of Skinner's set described to my by three mates who were in a tree looking over the fence. From what I heard it was pretty amazing.

System of a Down - I'm not normally into metal but I've been a big fan of System for a while now. They didn't disappoint with new arrangements for various sections of a few tracks and an energetic show.

Carl Cox - yes he did say something about this being his "home crowd". I rolled around on the grass for about 20 minutes laughing my ass off after that. Then I felt bad because he bought a house in Frankston.

Beastie Boys - Ahahahaha. Fuckin awesome. Really really impressed. Did a whole lot of stuff I didn't expect. Pity the turnaround between wheeling instruments on stage made a few people leave. Highlight of the day.

Chemical Bros - not nearly as good as I remembered. The lasers were pretty and I was ready to leave by that point.

I quite enjoyed it. I usually always leave disappointed, but not this year. My only gripe is turning into red lobster boy. Just call me Zoidberg.
My run down:

Kid Koala - Prolly my pick of the acts. Fucking killed it... effortless genius.

Concord Dawn - Well impressed, played propa dark (How about that Neo remix eh Fents!
 )

Infusion - Quite boring, which was a shame cos ive loved them in the past.

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Brilliant as always.

Decoder Ring - Get better every time I see em... pure class.

SOAD - Don't usually like them, but they really get their shit together live.

RJD2 - Only saw a bit, but what I saw was good.

Isaw bits and pieces of other acts, but couldn't be arsed writing more. All in all, a good day.

My 10 cents:

Decoder Ring: blew me away, first time I have seen them.

Concord Dawn: rocked it, sound was crap, crowd was pumped.

Kid Koala: sheer genius, made the complicated look so simple. Loved it when he said, "anyone here have a cassette deck?" and then threw a mix tape into the crowd.

Infusion: performance was amazing, but the set didn't grab me the way I wanted it to.

Freestylers: was great to see them live, wasn't completely blown away but enjoyed it all the same. would have loved a few live representations of some older tunes...

Beasties: see above, fucking wicked, was twenty metres from the front of the stage surrounded by the masses with my jaw attached firmly to the grass. They will always be one of my fave hip hop acts for their sheer exuberance and longevity.

Chemicals: from an entertainment perspective they rocked it, the lighting, the lasers, the sound and the visuals - all amazing. They played a real crowd pleaser of a set for the first half (to be expected), with the highlights for me being Block Rocking Beats, Galvanise and Brothers Gonna Work It Out. Second half was very laid back and dreamy which put me on my arse after a long day...

Coxy: you crack me up. All you needed to complete your set was the "I Love Frankston" tee I saw some teenager wearing earlier in the day.

Pissed that I missed The Streets and Hilltops due to overcrowding, but all in all a great day...

U guys have wrapped it up all nicley.

Concord Dawn - SMASHED IT! Tiki's a nutter MC i was lovin it, crowd was way up for it...Even got the lighter massive happening!! And yes hardy, that Neo remix sounded mad!!! Wicked room to dance up the back too. Even my mate who hates dnb was into it. ohhhh and the ECHO - OUT OF TIME - CALYX Remix.....Oh gosh on a big system its soooooo good!!!!!!!

Hilltop Hoods / Streets - I dont know one person who got to see em. way too packed.

Butterfingers - Wicked BAND! Ya moms on the top of my things to do list...nuff said ;) Wicked too see 4 of my cousins there rocking it hard too:lol:

Powderfinger - AMAZING! Sat in the bar near the main satge and drank a shitload and listened....ahhh the memories :P

Freestylers - Way too packed and crap.

RjD2 - Not what i expected...train wrecked the first mix :?

Kid Koala - Not what i expected either...had the crowd bouncin was ok.

Slipknot - Biggest mosh pit and the most weirdest dudes ive ever seen.

Beasties - OMFG! They killed it....sound wasnt too good up the back so bolted as far fwd as i could...Mixmaster Mike is a fuckin genius on decks, that massive screen did him justice...and the instrumentals they did rocked!

Chem Brothers - Shithouse, not my thing, long day went home.

All in all was the best BDO ive been too.....

Nice to catch up with everyone, Friday (wicked random mettings), Quick, Liz, Noz, Hardy, Flippo etc.....

Fi - U were no where to be seen  That butterfly was the BOMB just before beasties....dankshe! xoxoxoxox!!! 8)

BDO rules :D 8) :P

Really? Everyone I have spoken to said they were awesome and played a great set?

Heard Coxy played Flashdance and Drop the Pressure :?

First BDO I haven't been to in years.

Any bets as to where they are going to have it next year? Show grounds are a no go, Rod Laver has the tennis on???

Yeh great day. Great weather 2.

Concord, and all the bass heads that came to cut the rugs to them got ripped off by the soundman. Way too quiet. Good tracks tho.

I'm an ex metal head so I loved SOAD. Did not play enough of Steal This Album tho.

Infusion, I thought they were sensational. Hardy thanks for the tip-off there.

Beastyboys, I'm sure if i got up close enough I would have loved it, but from affar it was not working for me. Plus I was fucked by then.

Wolfmother were great; I thought Concord Dawn were better at BDO then at the party on Friday [fuckin nice to hear drum and bass on the boiler room system!]; Atmosphere was great: was even better at the sideshow, dude's got a massive mouth. Reckon they shoulda had Hilltops on one of the main stages though

gutted i missed Deceptikonz, Butterfingers, Kid 606, Polyphonic Spree woulda been fucking sweet to see

that was more about the fact that there was any drum and bass at all, I agree the sound could have been heaps louder, thought it was pretty quiet too even for Chemical Bros. I remember when they came last time the sound fucked my ears for days but i was heaps close to the front & after 4 years of unavoidable speakerlove maybe am deafer now in my old age. perhaps the area had a crackdown on noise levels and shit and they may have been obligated to keep it below a certain volume?

what kinda tunes did kid 606 play gal friday?

Didn't go to the BDO...but did go to the Freestyler's side gig last night..

Got to say they were fantastic. Their level of energy was very impressive, especially when you take into account their heavy touring schedule. They didn't play a particulalry long set, and it was mostly the "hits" stuff of 'Raw as Fuck'..there was a couple of other tunes I wasn't familiar with, quite possibly older stuff.

The two MC's/vocalists were awesome. Real stage presence, great musicans and they were having a ball. They had the crowd with them all the way.

In terms of translating the album tracks to the live setting, some material worked better than other material. From Raw as Fuck they did : Raw As F**k,Get a Life,The Slammer,Push Up,Punks,Dogs and Sledges,Loosing You & Too Far.

'Punks' was great,'Loosing you' was a definite highlight and 'get a life' was good. 'The Slammer' didn't work so well, I think it lost its tightness in the live performance. 'Push Up' really wasn't crash hot either, kinda sounded like a shonky cover, bit of a let down, cos they defintley have the power to do it better live.

i think also what has impressed me is the blurring of styles, it makes for great listening and means a greater audience can appreciate the tunes!

/end review
