I hope there's more to the other kid's suspension than what we see in the footage. He couldn't have handled himself better. One could argue that he should've walked away, but what's to say the little cunts wouldn't have followed him and sucker punched him from behind?

A police officer has been banned from attending basketball matches for five years after an incident involving a teenage female referee.

Police today confirmed the acting inspector from Maroondah was off-duty when the incident occurred at a basketball match in Knox in early March.

I'm all for copyright protection to a certain extent - I work for a company that makes it's money from movies and television, but this measure shows that the NZ government is in the pocket of big media, and willing to pass a law that most of its citizens are against.

The most shameful part is they took advantage of the Christchurch earthquake by using urgency to pass this through without public debate.

A bill which allows for the punishment of individuals or businesses without any proof or demonstration of due process? So it's really taking the justice process out of the hands of the courts and putting it into the hands of the music industry.

I think the govt see it as an issue they need to address, but they are just doing an awful job of it which inspires no faith that they are any good at doing anything really.

At the end of the day a system which relies on external, unchecked bodies which have the most to gain from a high number of offences to police the public seems like a total farce to me.

Having said that, can I think of a better way? No.

The RIAA or whoever sends a infringement notice to the ISP and they translate the IP and time to a person and take the action prescribed.

The responsibility for finding infringements is on the industry.

I think "happens all the time" is a vast overstatement, and even if so, doesn't make it any more acceptable. I think the vocal public protests that happened when they first tried to introduce this law make it more worthy of public debate.

Copyright law needs to be fair, balanced and well thought out and not written solely by the entities that are going to profit from it. Personally I do buy all of my music and movies. Agreed, the internet is not different to the real world, at least in an ethical sense, but it's the media companies that want the law to apply differently. Should you really have to pay a separate fee for a song you have paid for but uploaded to the cloud? That's what is happening between Sony and Amazon. I could think of more examples, but I can't be bothered.

My point is that government should be creating legislation that benefits people (and business), not just business.
