He wouldn't have died from the LSD itself, but from a symptom perhaps aggravated by LSD, like a weak heart or something. If he was peaking hard and having a bad trip, this would have greatly increased his blood pressure for a prolonged time.

This happened to someone I knew when I was younger, he died of a heart attack whilst tripping balls.
