Who should we donate to? UPDATED PLEASE READ!
Victorian Rural Fire Brigades Association - http://home.vicnet.net.au/~vrfba/
C.F.A - http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/
Wildlife Victoria - www.wildlifevictoria.org.au
Red Cross - http://www.redcross.org.au/vic/news_rel ... hfires.htm
our initial thought for a charity was Widows of Firefighters, but unless we set up our own charity it could be difficult to make happen
Are there any others I haven't thought of?

i'd go for a wildlife protection organisation
these fires have meant a lot of animals have lost their homes, those who haven't have nothing to eat.
this will impact on the species for years/decades to come ... and the people that can assist ened help.
I'm all for helping the CFA but it is funded whilst soem other wilderness operations aren't to such degrees.

Probably should place a thread in the main forum asking people to come across and vote in it.

Word, the CFA certanily doesn't have a lack of money at the moment. In fact their funding has increased dramatically over the last few years.... yet for some reason I still voted for them. Had a mate who worked for them last year and they cop a beating around this time of year.shepherd wrote: I'm all for helping the CFA but it is funded whilst soem other wilderness operations aren't to such degrees.
First you get her name. Then you get her number. Then you get some get some in the back seat of a hummer!
The thing with the CFA is while they do get some govt funding there are 20 CFA regions across the whole state. There are 1200 individual CFA brigades within 142 groups. 98% of CFA team members are volunteers. (Source - Annual Report 2005 http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/about/documen ... p_2005.pdf). With that kind of structure it wouldn't take long for the money to get spread thin.
The CFA are also vital for their role in bringing rural communities together.

Just because I rock, doesn't mean I'm made of stone.
IF we are to donate to the CFA, I think we should specify that it goes to one brigade for some type of equipment purchase. We could even have them come along to the gig to brief us on their activities etc.

One brigade? How would you choose them?marcus wrote:IF we are to donate to the CFA, I think we should specify that it goes to one brigade for some type of equipment purchase. We could even have them come along to the gig to brief us on their activities etc.

I think it should be for the animals. Unfortunatly animals are the victims that are looked over in situations like this. Whilst heaps of people will be donatng to CFA etc not many people will be thinking about the poor little animals that can't tell us if they have lots their home, family feeding grounds or if they are in pain. All to often animals suffer burns in their respitory systems that aren't visable. Please can we help the animals.

I'm starting to lean more towards helping the animals
I think a 50/50 split between the C.F.A & Wildlife Victoria is a goa

I just believe that the money would have greater effect if it focused on one group. Obviously this all depends on the amount of money that we raise.Polecat wrote:

I voted for the Wildlife fund, but am torn between who we should give the money to. Not wanting to detract from the tradegy of the situation, I don't think we should be posting pictures of (cute) severely injured animals which may result in an emotional decision of where the money should go to, rather than a more rational decision which may suggest otherwise. There have always been bushfires, and ecosystems have managed to survive. How many animals will be assisted if we donate to a wildlife organisation? Obviously there are a lot more factors which need to be addressed.
Maybe we should consider whether we split the money two ways?

Just saw the news and one of our family friends "Dick" who lives on Sheepyeard
flats has had his property destroyed. He was the stockman on the film
the man from snowy river. We spend heaps of time at his place. Real shame.
Have not even heard if all is ok(ish) gotta call my folks tomorrow. This cause
I would say has just been given fresh meaning to me.

plus the red cross gets a few bucks already. i don't see why it shouldn't go to the firies; as much as the animals need it too, they'd all be burnt to a crisp if it weren't for the cfa.

After a while we could reduce the poll down to 2 candidates and the option between the each of those 2 or a split between the 2 of them

Firies, or SES, or anyone to do with fighting fires for more equipment, staff, volly training, community education etc wins handsish down for me! but the poor little animals need a bit of H.E.L.P too, they will be all singed and sore and hungry & homeless... revegetation is important... I mean soon there wont be too much bush left to burn as bad as that may sound. Red Cross use heaps in overheads, advertising etc.... still not all the Boxing Day Tsunami money has been used, or used effectively from my understanding.

the bush needs fire, it's part of nature. Most of the tress in this land, appart from the really deep wet schleophyl ones, need to be burnt to regenerate. Fire is really not bad in the eyes of nature, there is a whole ecology built around it.ulyssian wrote:revegetation is important... The way that eucalypts (and other indigenous tree species) have been trained to need to be burnt back to encourage regrowth is part of the bush fire problems we face with our over populated society. Koori societies had it down pat.
