Hey guys, thought some of you might be interested in this. I know a few of you are on there, if so there's a link to a new group. For those of you who haven't heard of Facebook, have a look. It poos all over myspace.

Facebook is a social utility that connects you with the people around you.

Facebook is made up of many networks, each based around a company, region, high school or college.

You can use Facebook to:

* Share information with people you know.
* See what's going on with your friends.
* Look up people around you.

What kind of a place does such a comment have on an internet forum? Irony!

Actually i'm in a new place in a new country and i've found this site to be really good in networking and meeting new ppl who i have then gone about having quality 'face to face interactions' with...
I've also had much the same experience in relation to melbournebeats 8)

Facebook shits all over myspace.

It has usable groups.

It has usable photo albumns

It has commenting that is easy to keep track of.

It looks good.

just so much better,

I agree. Facebook is a gazillion times better. Mainly because you don't have to be a code monkey just to alter something.

I found ghey space irritating and mystifying. I found facebook intuitive and easy.

ive found it to be the opposite actually!
as mr j mentioned, it doesnt require to be a h4x0r to use so everyone creates an account straight from their email and adds their pix.
What pisses me off is all the similar picture sites like: ringo, hoverspot etc...
does anyone else get 1000's of requests from ppl to join those shitty sites?

must admit i have used it and don't mind it - still think it is missing some of the things that make myspace popular (ie unitiated music play, band/musician buy-in and ability to make your page look ugly).

Facebook is great for us logical types but I think the juniors need it to be a bit more haphazard.

I have experienced a similar phenomenon in the past fortnight also. Its entirely possible that Facebook usage has just clocked over some sort of networking tipping point (just like myspace did, one moment very few people were using it, then suddenly its everywhere).

Would be very interesting to do an analysis of myspace usage and vs facebook from inception to current, perhaps both would show some sort of tipping point where usage suddenly exponentially spiked (which I'm guessing may have been the case)

would be interested to hear from some marketing gurus who have some knowledge in this department (cos I sure as shit dont)

is it as good for stalking?
myspace will win

Facebook is nowhere near as good for stalking.

It does have the poke feature though. I haven't used it though as I find the concept of "poking" someone a little odd. Couldn't they have called it "nudge" or something.

Posted: Wed Jun 13, 2007 2:21 pm
by coda
no i'll show how much of an internerd i actually am... if you add the application POKE PRO you can nudge someone, karate chop them, have a beer with them... or a shot... damn... they're all fairly equal for stalking properties... but myspace you can stalk people that aren't listed as your friends...

It is ok for stalking.

People don't realise that if they put themselves in an extended network then everyone in that network can see their content.

People tend to put up more private photos too.

Wack yourself in the Australia network and you shoudl be able to find plenty of stuff people think only mates can see.

re: Poke. The name is wierd. The limp wristed icon is wierder.

There are a number of 'experts' who suggest that these networking tools make it much easier to have affairs.

Opinions??

Does anyone have any experience with this??

yeah stalkling is the best thing about myspace, that and music. id rather stalk than 'poke' bit less physical.

Nah just go into privacy and crank down the default levels a bit.

i can speak on this for myspace at least

it experienced 15% month on month growth for about 18 months ... stayed at the same % growth but obviously as the base got higher the increases number wise were higher. social networks by virtue of what they are rely on volume to really fire - facebook is currently only at 170k unique users and mysapce is at 2.7m domestically ... facebook is still a good 18 months behind myspace with users.

short answer - there sort of is a tipping point - but that is solely related to the number of users/advocates the tool has.

I've received a whole bunch of facebook invites this week too. I pretty much just ignored them.

I generally hate that sort of thing, myspace is the first one I have every actually used. I used to get invites from BEBO, WAYN and any number of similar things. I usually ignor anything like it these days. Dunno why I still have this veiw as I've really enjoyed using myspace. I guess at this stage I have no need whatsoever for facebook. Between melbournebeats, inthemix and myspace I don't really see a need

Dan have a look. It's one million times better than myspace.

reason number #1245: When people add albums of photos to their account they can select people in the photo and label them. Then you can click on people and see all the photos they appear in.

That's a pretty cool feature.
Even though I'm not willing to get onto Bebo, myspace or Facebook, I see that could be a very useful tool.

On another note, if I get one more "this person will know you don't like them if you don't add your details" I'll shoot someone

Facebook seems ok. For networking the best professional tool ive seen is LinkedIn - there are flaws in the way FaceBook handles it.

still, as a blog/photo album tool that you can also use for limited networking, its good. Ill probably shut down my blogspot and photobuckets and just use that.

I dont think its necessarily a global tipping point MRJ - more a degrees of separation thing that results in a personal tipping point - ie people that you associate with are all likely to be introduced to facebook at the same time given the way it functions through networks, and hence are likely to all invite you at the same time.

I have recently become a facebook addict - the design is very clean, tho a little sterile, but I think the architecture is awesome, and the ability to develop 'applications' that users can put into their profiles is very very cool.

scripticles

I squared it off in case I ever wanted to use it, but found that given I don't have a fucking software engineering degree I couldn't change shit on it.

Plus nobody wanted to be my friend.

OK so myspace is a vessel which allows elder guys to exchange sexual favours with underage bitcherz for nerd knowledge, wheres the problem here?

yes facebook does seem to have reached critical mass in Australia recently.. all these people at work are on it that would not even know what myspazz is.

But I don't like how you can't see the details of people who you haven't added as a friend (refer "stalker" comments above).

I like looking up my old enemies and seeing what crap things they are up to now and how they enjoy scrapbooking as a hobby.
