Hey, I'm new

Post by Greedy Sheila »

And English (So any whinging pom abuse etc - lets get it out of the way now ;-)

I'm heavy into the Drum and Bass scene over here in Manchester - but me and the other half decided we need a change of scene and are looking into moving over to Melbourne in the next couple of years.

Was hoping you guys could fill me in on the Drum and Bass scene over there. Have heard good things so far... But wanted to make a few jungleist acquaintances before we crossed the pond. :D

Hope you are all good

Well I came over for 6 weeks a few years ago but went down the east coast. Loved Brisbane and Sydney, but never made it Melbourne. My other half and I both have family in Melbourne and my Mum and Dad used to live there so it seems like the right place to go.

All the Ausies on the UK forums I've spoken to have said Sydney, Perth and Melbourne have some really good DnB night on. But you can't get much information out of them before they all start rowing about Pendulum lol.

Melbourne Drum&Bass is pretty healthy I guess.
Lot of Internationals passing through all the time.

Local nights seem to struggle in the winter, summer is mental though
No way! Just down the road then. How long have you been in Aus for?

Clown Step - That's a phrase I've not heard in a long time.

So when you were in Manc, did you used to go to Guidance, Step Back, Spell Bound, Viagra fools? All those nights were pretty big 6 years ago. Only Viagra is still going strong.

So from One Manchunion to another - can I take you as a testimonial that moving to Melbourne is definitely the way to go? Especially now they are charging £110 grand for 2 bed terrace houses in Moss Side and Longsight. - It's a joke - no one can afford to get a place.

Im only just nearing 21 now so I never got to go out bar the odd pub in Alty.
Best off asking Joe Seven on here about nights, Bit older than me, from Fallowfield

:!: That's unbelievable... £110!
Depending where you want to live here, you will get so much more for your money its insane.
Better life here in my opinion...no one in their right mind would pay that sort of money to live down
longsight or the moss :gooch: if you had the chance to live here.

Basically mate, Thinking back I hated so many things about Manchester.
I personally feel a lot safer here. Stupid things like walking around town with my phone out.

Mentallity of people here seems far more relaxed.
Beach and good weather are always a plus too.

I wouldn't pass up the oppertunity to move here :)

anyway  bed, knackered :D
Sounds like heaven so far. Manc has improved a lot since the bomb - it looks a lot nicer, but still full of scallies. Jungle scene is still thriving though :D

Been looking into my points to get a visa and i'm a bit worried. I'm a Media Planner / Buyer and I can't see it on the list of jobs that get scored. So need to do some real detective work of otherways to get a Visa.

pft, recognition will only be attained by those who can attain commercial success such as Pendulum, Concord Dawn and London Electricity. Other than that it would not be recognised by more than 400 headz at the most. Drum n Bass had its peak in Melbourne 5-6 years ago, and sadly as much as i hate to say it, it will never be recognised again in the same capacity as it was then. Having said that, this does not represent the atmoshpere nor the environment you will find at most Melbourne Drum n Bass nights, as im sure most will testify to you that it is accomodating to most tastes of d'n'b styles.

just my two cents.

Other than drum n bass, Melbourne is a beautiful city to live in and grow with.

Dean coming with the voodoo science once again. I enjoy going out to Melbourne D&B events a lot more now than a few years ago.

That said, I'm a grumpy old codger who's opinion should be taken with a pinch of salt. Have fun in Bleak City Greedy Sheila and welcome to MB.C, home of inta-inta-melbournebeats0rz. :)

yeah sorry if my comments have been taken the wrong way. My comments are only in reference to the size of the scene not the atmosphere created by it. For example i have experienced some of my favourite nights at clubs like bunker in the past year which only cater for around 100 headz. Quality not quantity.

welcome GS. Melbourne is the best choice of city to move to here IMHO

I always compare melbs to manc and sydney to london, obviously Melbs and manc win every time! And that from a Kentish girl

Why not come out on a temp visa for work, then get your sponsor to back you for permanent residency? That's what we're doing.

This city rules regardless of whether or not you like dnb or whatever. Very inviting place and people. I cannot think of a better place in the world for myself and my family, though I've never been to the UK.

My mum lived in Melbourne for 2 years and that is exactly what she said - but without the scallies that you get in Manchester.

@ Dean G
Over here the scene seems to come in waves. It had a peak in 99 - 2001 and then went shit for about 3 years. Most of the nights stopped or shrank, then it just boomed again from 2004 onwards and there are loads of good nights again. It seemed to boom when people got board with Garage. So maybe any dip in numbers is temporary as it was over here. Just keep encouraging the next generation. I dragged all my little cousins kicking and screaming to their first Drum and Bass nights and now they are hooked. Is dub step kicking off over there - that seems to be tempting a few of the ravers away from the regular nights over here. But they will be back
COME ON U SPURS!!!
Mate - my mum's a red and my Dad's a blue, so I've stayed out of it from an early age. I have enough trouble supporting myself let a lone a team. ;-)

Thanks for all the advice / info etc though - you all seem a really lovely bunch.

Anyone want to see what is going on in Manc at the moment - check out my lads Dawn Raid http://www.myspace.com/dawnraid, they are just starting to shine through and have put in a lot of hard work to get a foothold. ( I say my lads as I have fed and watered them through the journey.. Behind ever good man (and/or jungle crew) is a good woman and all that 8) )

haha

Ton is a longtime old friend of mine. He's in a band now called the Daywalkers, a sort of Drum and Bass cross over with Nu metal. Check them out on myspace http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu ... d=31981467

I'm sure he would love a trip over to Aus if anyone was willing to book him. He's still working hard.
