Okies, here's an interesting dillemma
Big tech artist (James Holden)
Remixes track (Teardrop by massive attack)
It's available via torrent.
This is an unreleased track (I don't think it's ever made white label, if there is a place to buy it, please let me know).
Now, this is a track, but unreleased (and I'm tipping unliscenced).
So, is there any real harm in downloading it?

Hahahaha... seriously though, the lines are being blurred more and more these days with the whole free downloads thing. It's not as easy as just saying "Buy tracks from legal download sites and don't support blogs" because plenty of blogs offer free unreleased tracks from artists like you say. I think a fair rule is: "If the track is available for purchase (or is about to be), don't download it for free." Beyond that it's fair game (as long as the artists/labels involved consent).
In a lot of ways, legally a remix of a track is still considered "a different recording of the original composition", but these days remixes change the original track so much that they're almost a work of their own. Mmmmmm. Blurry lines.
