Re: Why do Aussies pronounce H as "haitch" instead "aitch"?
i think speaking properly is important, i know i abuse the english language now and then but definitely not at work, you just wouldn't be taken seriously when putting opinions or ideas across. i don't get this whole haitch and aitch argument, but saying words like 'youse' is terrible (and Quick i don't think i have ever heard you say it as i would have said something). i don't think people are being all uppity about having a problem with pointing out things that people say that annoys them, its an opinion! And probably stems from being taught at home or school, to speak properly! It goes hand in hand with saying please and thank you and being respectful of others and your elders i think.

oooo controversy, here is Direkts opinion of the matter in 2009
Interesting....back in 2005 though....Direkt wrote:That is kind of the point of having a "pure" and "correct" form of language mate.DBoy wrote:If you get the point across you have succussed in communicating. I do not care how it sounds or what form it takes.
I believe trying to hold onto any “pure” or ”correct” form of a language is outdated.
Puts everyone on the same page so we can all succeed in communicating.
you been going to school lately or something?Direkt wrote:okay... so is it Heroin or Eroin...
Word... down with the aristocrats and french-fuckers changing our good ol' English language.... Haitch it has been, and Haitch it will be!
Fuck the dictionary, whadda ya reckon BRB - we'll start the Haitch movement...
And it's precisely coz of uppity bitches like the Queen and your good self that I stick by my guns. I know its supposed to be Aitch, I know we're taught that in school - but fuck it - they're wrong...
word... I'm strictly Haitch... I mean face it, the letter is a H - stands to reason it should sound like a 'Ha' type sound...

beautiful story that
Re: Why do Aussies pronounce H as "haitch" instead "aitch"?
long thread..
the thing that weirds me out about australians use of the letter H is when saying something like "an historic" but.. really emphasising the h... i see it on the news all the time.. they think it is correct to use an before a soft sound, but make the h really hard...
maybe because writing it down seems ok, and maybe the person who wrote it doesn't really pronounce the h.. but the newsreader does..
it annoys me sometimes..
