I'm looking into acoustic stuff atm, deciding whether to just go to a pro or go DIY.
Just came across this in a mailout
http://blog.tunecore.com/2010/01/diy-ac ... field.html
A bit American specific altho could prob get the materials online. Some good links at the bottom too.
Anyone have much experience with this?
I'd probably spend up to $500 (and its a pretty small room, rectangle 3x2 or something with BIRs taking up some of the backwall space too), so maybe its better to just go through a specialist audio store. But its interesting to here about the fibreglass for sure, definitely won't be getting foam!!

I don't think you need a pro to do it, just do some reading online (Auralex have some good reference papers). You'll get the gist of it pretty quickly. It pretty much just comes down to as many bass traps and foam/fibreglass batts as you can afford, knowing the main places to stick them, and making sure you don't "overdampen" the room. Ultimately the room shape itself will be the main limiting factor on the sound quality (find a room calculator and check out the modes and you'll see where any problem frequencies like), and there's not much you can do about that except move to a different room. Another way to hear where you've got dips + peaks is to do a slow sine wave sweep of the full frequency range. Usually you'll find the real problem areas between 0-1000Hz. The other limiting factor will be budget and any furniture/features in the room that you can't move. Do the best job you can of it, then just try and get used to the room's sound after that. I've had good results with the RK-1 room kit which set me back about $500:

I ended up placing them like this...
Not 100% perfect, but due to the shape of the room/furniture that was the best I could manage.
