does internode do packages [checks] they do but with VOIP...don't really want VOIP

TPG looks to be the best i think, Optus is looking pretty expensive, and i don't even want to look at Telstra

because as i understand it VOIP relies on a heavy internet usage, and the want to connect your internet and phone line. I don't really need that, or the cost associated to it.

i am going with TPG, $40 a month for 10gig a month and not bad on the local call cost. Win

customer service is okay-ish, not great, but does the job

Righto... I'm finally ready to dip my toe and get some proper net hooked up at home. Ideally I want moderate internet usage, wireless, good speeds - decent coin and service, standard. I don't want a landline, but understand I need to get one connected

Trying to recall the recommendations.

I have to sign up to Telstra first right, basic plan - don't use it once and then I can fuck it off after 3-months or something.
Then it looks like iinet is the go if they offer connection to my hood (Nth. Reservoir) - naked DSL?

Cheers for any possible incoming advice

Firstly, if there is an existing telephone line there you can get naked...

naked DSL that is, which means no landline payment required.

depends what you want to spend but ive been hearing good things about internode.
TPG are good, just so long as you dont need customer service

Also remember that naked dsl == ISP pays for the phone line

It's still there, it's still Telstra, you just get one bill rather than two.

Not always cheaper either.

I am going to say it - cause for me it has been true. Optus does ok.

I use them for my mobile and my internet. Have Naked DSL with them at home and service is good, package is good for my needs, speeds are good - online accounts etc good and to date, their tech support has been good.

So much cheaper than telstra, so much better service than your TPG type deals. I find them to be ok.

There's a physical phone line, but no connection. From what I've heard, and what I've been told by ISP providers and MB'ers alike - I need an established connection to get naked DSL. Then after I'm hooked up with the ISP, I can disconnect the landline and get my nakedness on.

No?

Depending who you go with they just make the adjustement at the local exchange, and sometimes at your house. I had a telsta home phone. Turned it off. Got Optus naked DSL and they didnt even come to my house, just made the adjustment at the exchange, free of charge in order to win my bizzzzzinessss, and bang. I was on teh interwebs looking at boobies.

you don't need to sign up for a land-line first.... I made that mistake, paid $60 connection fee to telstra, + 1st months line rental ($30) at a waste...

I'm with netspace you only need to give them your address to hook you up, not sure if that's the same with other ISPs.. I'm so far happy with the service.. we get 400GB for $90 per month.

Hmm... starting to think maybe your option was a good one Dan. Pretty sure I have a 10-day cooling off period with Telstra where I can cancel my contract... Hey, I wonder if I can use that 10 days to connect to any naked ADSL2 provider?

YO - I signed up to Telstra for a home phone connection... so I can chose any ISP I want. That's all, no Telstra for internets.

Now to chose the ISP.

Al - nah, I'm in Reservoir.

Regarding speeds. I'm like 300m from the Reservoir exchange... are all companies going to be roughly the same speed?

Deviant - what happens when you exceed your quota with Netspace? I want either throttling or capped, in that order - no excess charges.

I'm on a throttled plan, but we have 400GB now, so that is probably not going to happen.

Looking like TPG might be the go. I know the customer service isn't flash - but $60 for 200GB with 1MBps shaping sounds too good to be true.

Now, wirless modems... anything I need to know? The D-Link ones @ JB seem heaps cheaper than the ones on TPG's site (Dynalink).

I've got 2 MacBook's, an iMac and iPhone to connect.

try not to get modem/router in one unit... creates problems with bottlenecks in the network etc... I can't remember the specific technical reason for this off the top of my head... but one of my tech nerd friends told me this a while back.
