No idea. Mac forums would likely give you the answer

But if I had to guess I would say firewire.

firewire it up in target mode and just copy over docs, music etc. reinstall any apps from scratch.

If you just copy your documents directly, that's all you'll have off your old system. Migration Assistant also copies all your applications and settings. HOWEVER, it totally has AIDS, so don't do that! At all. It shouldn't be too much work to get it all set back up and it is a chance to cut out the dead wood.

BTW, the current MBP's have some issues with firewire - I had to switch my external HDD to USB, coz it kept randomly freezing the system :?

I suggest just copying your docs off your time machine via USB, that way you can have your old machine on and sometimes it's easier to find things from within the system. (Don't do Migration Assistant off that either. Serial. You will think you have broken your new 'puter and then have to do it directly anyway.)

retzie, im confused.

first, did disk utility/repair on old mac. lots of things it couldnt fix.
then bought new firewire (old mac n new mac have different firewire pin numbers etc)
took 2 hours to swapsies, (im assuming this is migration assistant?)

now updating all software on new mac, then going to go and delete some old crap from it.
all my programs are used but not all the stuff i store.

have i fucked up? if so, I will be blaming Kevin. And he will never hear the end of it, and he will be annoyed and he will have to fix it again.

mwahahhahaha.

its really annoying to have shiny new pooter right next to me but can only stare at it till all this is done. my fingers are itching.
i also bought wireless keyboard and mousey cos if how i type, fast and hard hahah.

^ Sounds like you made in through okay with Migration Assistant. (Yes, that's what it runs if you choose whatever that option is at first start up.) If it's all there, then you're sweet :)

Mine hung for aaaaaaages (well, no - it pretended it was working for over 24 hours) and then tried to tell me all sorts of lies. I ended up deleting the random bits and pieces MA had managed and did it all by hand.

I would still recommend using USB to connect to your external (unless it's wireless?) - will save you some totally avoidable pain.

ahhh right, no it all seemed to be okay. just took forever. finishing updates this morning as the server dropped out last night (said it was going to take 11 hours when i left work :/)

use USB to connect to keyboard & mouse you mean? both wireless. i couldnt fork out for a new pooter & then buy some ugly black PC shit thing to go with it.

i must admit, its not just the functionality of mac that has attracted me for years, its cos they are sexy too. :)

Nope, I meant whatever you are using as the time machine for the new 'puter (an external HDD?)
