plan now is fly to BKK, head south asap to go diving at Koh Tao, then back to bangers to fly to Chang mai...
then border crossing into Laos....then do gibbon ziplining, and wing it for 2 weeks, then fly back to bangers for shopping and parties with my thai crew...

anyone dived at Koh Tao? Want flashpacker dive school + accom on Hat Sai ri.

also looking for rec's in Chang mai, never been north in thailand....

borneo jungle (which was feckin intense) was fine with sneakers, but we were in the coastal parts so less leeches.
ew leeches.

i usually only take thongs and sneakers and end up hardly wearing the sneakers ever. boots = heavy shit to carry for the other 30 days of no trekking. :(

the flight of the gibbons is tonnes of fun. we did the one out of bangers and had an absolute ball

totes recommend

boots are good because there's some ankle support- good for uneven grounds. agree they're a pain to carry though. can tie to the front of your pack next to your canadian flag? lolololol

Bans is a pretty rank outfit to dive with, biggest school=gigantic boats=squillions of divers=not very relaxing time. I spent 5 months diving on Tao and would definitely choose most schools over them. DJL, Crystal or Buddha View are nice. Dive Chumphon Pinnacle and Southwest Pinnacle if you can - by far the best sites there! (except for Sail Rock, but thats closer to Phanghan)

That must be new... I always just used to book in exactly 24 hours in advance and nearly always get to pick a good seat.. never saw option to pay for seat selection, not that I would, pretty crap indeed. I booked some qantas flights with last minute and they let me pick seats at same time as ticket booking for no extra, but book through qantas direct and no option :/

qantas are waste and the planes often nearly crash and they are staffed by fat, past it slags with many chips on shoulders and a raspy voice and cross eyes. no wonder they n early crash most weeks.

qantas are up there with telstra as my most hated 'ozzie businesssess'

qantas have gone badly downhill over the past few years. emirates/singapore/malaysian/etihad or in fact pretty much anyone else will be heaps more useful. it does mean you have to fly united rather than american when you're in the US if you want to earn points (most of them are star alliance rather than oneworld, except for emirates who are so ronery), but american are ghetto as fuck these days so it really makes no odds.

ba are still pretty decent tho.

lolz, have any of you had to fly United long-haul recently? In fact, even if you last flew them in 1986, the experience is basically exactly the same today. Their very oldest planes fly LAX/SFO-SYD/MEL and the flight attendants are what you'd get if you took the ones off a 53 minute commuter flight and told them they had to do 15 hours without warning. The movie service is G-rated via ancient monitors/projecty screen, with sound shaky at best. Meals are still of the "light or dark brown sludge" variety and you are lucky if you get a blanky.

Basically, US airlines are in the same category as their banks and mobile phones networks, viz. cheques and CDMA. Anyone remember these good ol' days?

Image
From January 2011

Alas, I can but dream of Singapore and Emirates. For the trans-Pacific flights, Qantas and Air NZ are still top o' the pile. (Have not tried Delta or Virgin Oz - reports indicate decent, but not surpassing the oldies.)

Now, United domestic is another matter - they are still one of the better ones. Having said that, domestic air travel here is fairly shit and pretty exxy across the board :?

oh, don't get me wrong, united can eat a bucket of dicks. in fact several buckets. i'd rather fly air western samoa b2b half the trip on a raft than ever go united, even shorthaul. the only good thing i can say about them is that if you have any decent status with them, then you get upgrades (including economy -> first) out the arse. seriously all the time.

but aside from that it's godawful, and their ancient 747s are even worse still.

still not flown v australia or virgin atlantic, apparently they're really quite good though. plus virgin atlantic (at least - dunno about v australia) share points with singapore, so if you get singapore frequent flyer, you can get points from singapore, virgin atlantic, united/continental, lufthansa, air nz, sas, air canada, and a wide range of fucking horrible and fairly marginal airlines.

 Good, as long as we all know how much worse than Qantas it gets. Interesting you mention a raft - kayak seems to be Gmaps' recommendation on the matter.

I'm interested to see what the United/Continental merger does around here. So far it has just made me think I'd be on a Continental plane, only to show up and find out it's United :?. Unfortunately, although I do a bit of domestic travel, cheapest flight selection has meant I've got fuck-all 'miles' with everyone. Also, in my experience, alliances are utter bollocks: I was earning so few Qantas points for AA flights, that I ended up just getting a separate AA account :tard:

As for QF seat selection: I think I can still (try to) select when I check in, but you used to be able to do it whenever you bought the ticket. $20 tae fuck. They better still use frequent flyer ongoing preferences...

Virgin Atlantic are only mildly better than United.

United can get fucked. Flown with them twice in the past 18 months AU-USA and back... they suck. At least they used to have decent spirits (Tanqueray as gin), but I heard they recently canned the free drinks - and now you have to pay for them.

VA are only better as they have TV's in the back of the seats, and you can earn Velocity points... but fuck me you have to work hard to get more than just a drink with your meal. The staff at the check-in counters are pretty ordinary, it certainly is not "customer service".

Wonder who we'll be flying with come Sept?
