Re: JOBS
verrrrrrrry hard to get into just by winging an interview if you can get one. i worked in ads for 7 years and they get 200+ emails a day asking for a spot and all are willing to work for free.
would you want to be art directing or copywriting? super competative.
if you want into creative your best bet in the meantime is to maybe go thru the AFA grad school. speak to Caroline.

Am getting pretty good marks, my plan is to go to the award school once I am finished uni and then go from there. See what happens I guess. Will be a cunt to get into though for sure. I am in the process of doing my portfolio and I am going to take it into the agencies all nicely presented and attention them personally to the relevant people, rather than just sendin an email.

Re: JOBS
internships and grad programs ftw.
working for free to build experience seems to be the way to go. my bro doing much the same and just keeps putting himself out there and getting a few results. definitely a 'who you know' kinda industry it seems.
g'luck, mate.

Re: JOBS
If your portfolio is kickass your lack of experience won't matter so much. Focus on making it badman and schmoozing advertising people because getting a foot in the door, and/or a personal recommendation wil make a huge difference.same o wrote:Yeah I know all this, I want to do copywriting and then go into art directing.huge wrote:verrrrrrrry hard to get into just by winging an interview if you can get one. i worked in ads for 7 years and they get 200+ emails a day asking for a spot and all are willing to work for free.

What Huge said about doing the AFA school is true, will stand you in good stead.

A good mate of mine and former housemate (and hugh's old accountant) is a Finance Director for an advertising company. At an entry level position you'll be looking at about 30k a year.
minimum wages and all that.

they pay people anywhere from 27-30 entry level account manager. that's after 3 years at least at uni and they will sit on that for 2 years probably. believe.

Re: JOBS
Actual commission was for ANYTHING. (the client is a close mate so knows the kind of illustration i do)..so no real instructions..im thinking of doing her a hip tattoo...something to roll up over the band of the jeans..
But then when i confirmed i had carte blanche to do whatever - her sister threw in she should get her unborn child done..and that she would send me the ultrasound..
Well i put and end to that idea before it could get outta hand...

Re: JOBS
Done a week so far of my new internship at Big Dog Creative in Prahran. Loving it! Looking forward to getting paid but for now i'm stoked to be working on some big projects like Channel V, New York Dolls tour flyers, Peter Stuyvesant, Champion Tobacco and Davidoff. Hopefully it'll just roll into full-time work

Re: JOBS
Hey guys,
I know there are a few graphic and web designers lurking around these parts (how many under 30 though I'm not sure). The programme I'm with in India at the moment is now advertising for the next round of placements. They are for 15 weeks (mid Feb to early June 2012), fully funded aside from a $1500 contribution fee and a chance to really make a difference to some amazing organisations. Sure it's not paid as such, but you won't be too much out of pocket, and it's an opportunity to change things up a bit and put your skills to great use in a different context. (Plus I want some cool people to come and party with me in Bangalore next year.)
