I'm no footy expert, but that doesn't sound much like head & shoulders above to me?

Hawks by a Goal
That's one game mate, and it wasn't a Grand Final.

Head and shoulders IMO.

Congrat's to Cooney for taking out the Brownlow. A close race it was!

Commiserations to Richo, so close! As a veteren of the game it would have been nice to see him take it out (well that, and because I love him!)... he mightn't get another chance like that. Bad luck big fella!

Still, Cooney's a deserved winner. Well done.

Nah, he doesn't usually poll too high... standard forward biz... plus he doesn't seem to be a favourite of the umps.

I kept turning back in between Poseidon, but fell asleep. Big ups Cooney! That does have to be the most boring show on the planet though. I reckon they need to spruce it up a bit. Reading numbers, meh...

Mate, it was twice as quick as it usually is...

Demetriou (sp?) was flying through the rounds.

But yep, pretty boring - standard.

yeah he was calling the numbers a LOT quicker this year. but yeah, still boring. only the last few rounds are interesting to watch. Interviewing the players seemed kind of awkward and embarrassing really

Agree.

Red carpet is usually "goodtimes"... but alas, I missed it...

Anyone catch the stuff up at the beginning of the count when Demetriou read out round 2 before round 1... poor feller... someone would have got a roasting after that no doubt.

What you talking about, Franklin managed 20 votes only 4 off the winner.

Perhaps the umps dont like Richo for the same reason most others dont, he visually sooks when things dont go his way instead of just getting on with the task at hand. :(
But admittedly he has been much better this year.

Ummm, Richo got more than Franklin dude.

It's common knowledge that forwards don't often win the Brownlow, nor defenders.

The award usually goes to the main ball winners, the midfielders.

Let's have a look at the last few winners, for example...

2008: Adam Cooney : midfield
2007: James Bartell : midfield
2006 : Adam Goodes : wing (kinda midfield)
2005: Ben Cousins : midfield
2004: Chris Judd : midfield
2003: Buckley, Goodes and Ricciuto : all midfield
2002: Simon Black : midfield
2001: Jason Akermanis : midfield
2000 : Shane Woewodin : midfield
1999 : Shane Crawford : midfield
1998 and 1997 : Robert Harvey : midfield

There ya go... the last 10+ years.

PS: if you're wondering, the last forward to win the Brownlow was James Hird (CHF) in 1996, he shared it with Michael Voss, yep... another midfielder.

Regardless.

Al missed my point that forwards don't often earn the favourable eye from the umpires.

Buddy broke the 100 goal mark this year - that hasn't been done for some time. Be crazy if he wasn't up there. Great year from Buddy, and he still didn't finish in the top 3.

1st place: Cooney (mid)
2nd: Black (mid)
3rd: G. Ablett (mid)
M. Richardson (wing/forward)

Thus the reason for why we have a Coleman medal

Brownlow has always been a midfielders award.

no ifs or buts on that

I actually don't think the brownlow has that much pull anymore - I like the AFLPA MVP award better as it's voted by peers (players) instead of umpires.

Fo' shizzle Phatman.

And yup, agree with you on the AFLPA MVP and also the AFL Coaches Award.

Umpires should be busy umpriring impartially, not taking note on who is the best player.

Forwards and particularly defenders who been the unsung heroes in terms of Brownlow votes for far too long IMO.

when did Libba win it?

he won as a back pocket didn't he?

although he was really a tagger.

he won same year as dipper didn't he?

didn't Tony Lockett win a brownlow at some stage?

Yep, Plugger won it back in his St. Kilda days - kicking bags and surprisingly not suspended for a season!

I thought Libber was more an on-baller I thought... although yeah, perhaps he was a backman. Scraggy fuck!

Hey, I'm not saying that forwards or defenders never win it... but nowhere near as much as midfielders (as can be seen above).

Libber: 1990
Lockett and Platten: 1987
Dipper and Greg Williams: 1986

oh noes, i got your point, and i agree, i just saw an opportunity to bag Richo in that
as a forward he did not poll (Franklin does and he and Richo have been widely compared)
now that he is on the wing and not sooking as much, he is polling votes, so there is a lesson in that me thinks. No one likes a cry baby

Tight finish we got goin here. 1 behind Kronz and I know we've both tipped the opposite team. Either I go down in flames with my team or the Seppo climbs to the top for a share of the trophy.
