In fact I just love my job.
Go IT, go.
No slumming it in my Steve Irwin zookeeper outfit with hardhat anymore.
When I go into the field I have to wear a suit too... hard hat and heels.
Practical.

Methinks the salary difference and the chance to change federal legislation may still bring you to the dark side. Yes yes.
I wanted to be a hero. I wanted to be the center of attention. I wanted the glory, I wanted the fame. I wanted the pretty girls to come up and say, "Hi, I see that you're good at Centipede."

Can't influence legislation without research being done in the first place, and I don't want to stuck in the meetings and politics end of the spectrum. I'll be heading into academic anyway I think, less bullshit, more control over research.C.I.A. wrote:MwahahahaHAHAHAH!!!!!flippo wrote:I don't think I've ever worked anywhere where anyone has worn a suit.

But even the director here dosen't wear a suit, I think it's just a city social construct thing.

There are pros and cons to both.
I'll see you at the next Port Of Melbourne Dredging meeting. I'll be one of the independent people assessing the impacts on the bay. Good times. Good times.

Spent any time in a University recently???
hehe. Well I have a bit to do with both academic and govnmt. With uni, you are far less likley to get in trouble dishing out truths that don't allign with the curret governments policies, your overheads are less, more acces to cheaper man hours, people seem to be less disgruntled and more interested in their research, and alot more flexibility in the actual questions you're answering, ie. you can do pure ecological research, or partnerships with gov. and private to still do more applied stuff. Also there seems to be much less mindless beurocracy, things are a little more autocratic. At least that's how it works in my industry.
I can see how both sides have their advantages/disadvantages and it's probably just a grass is always greener scenario. I'm heading towards academia and to me it means: shit pay, useless management structures, academics bickering like children, the endless quest for grants/publications, compromised teaching.... the list goes on. Yes, you can speak your mind, but only coz no-one's going to listen! Also, the flexibility of approach in research is inextricably linked to mad competition for grants and having to constantly justify yourself against ridiculous productivity measures (can anyone say RQF?) Unfortunately, my field has fuck-all connection to industry, so a real job (using my actual skills) is completely out of the question
Whoa! Try seventeen committees and thirty-five working groups for every fucking decision! Heard about the Melbourne Uni restructure? Luckily I'm off most of my committees now, but talk about absolute, ABSOLUTE debarcle...flippo wrote:there seems to be much less mindless beurocracy

bitchfights amongst academics clawing for CRC grants, chopping the dead wood from the tree etc.
Melbourne Uni is moving from a place where ideas can be bounced around to one that focuses on the amount of coin you can pull in for your faculty.
Could. Not.
