A question for the photo peeps:

I am getting a reprint of a photo from the NY Times. My options are that they do the print (museum quality) with or without frame, or I can get it done on canvas/other by a third party. Obviously their print will be the schmicker option, but I kinda don't want it to be too precious, as it's liable to be dragged around the world with me. Also, canvas is cheaper, so can get bigger (not that this really helps with the drag factor...) What say you, expert peoples?

Also, Gowanus Canal, Brooklyn looking purty (taken on my phone!):

Image

This is the most notorious, stinking, scum-filled piece of water, but I still <3 it.

^^ love that shot Retzie. :D

This is an article and gallery about Vivian Maier, an inspirational street photographer who died in total obscurity and whose negatives were discovered in an old box. Its such beautiful work, and a tragedy it was never appreciated until now.

actually I think the snail is. and the colours are a bit intense on the staircase.

I think these would look a lot better if they were more natural. blasting rhe colour and contrast too hard cheapens them a lot. my 2 cents.

they're good shots BTW, I'm just not a fan of the finish is all.

yeah i was prob looking more at the last picture when i made that comment.

the snail looks like the colours were inverted.

still kinda cool though

the background has a surface blur filter on it and is the same image as the hearts made really large. the hearts are just the same layer behind each droplet and slightly warped so they assume a rounder shape.

half an hours work I reckon.

Yeah I hear ya, don't usually smash em out quite that far, the last one is about how I like 'em. Quite new to HDR so testing the waters a bit! Definitely easy to overdo, but the snail wasn't the best shot to start with so I intentionally twisted it out as far as I could!

nah, I reckon it's all just refraction. water droplets photographed with a wide aperture against a patterned background. the droplets are just refracting the light from the background.

its more how round the droplets are that gets me, you check out their other stuff and they have done heaps of them. i have tried getting droplets to look like that naturally and it doesn't work, so i guess they have done some distorting in photoshop.

possible, but unlikely. all the shots on her website look retouched to shit. when it looks this unnatural, it usually is.

to what extent is it still photography when an image is that photoshopped?
when a raw imagine is doctored almost beyond all recognition from the original, is it still considered photography? grey area imo.

edit: seems to become more about your skill on a computer than with a camera tbh.

IMO its always photography if the source material is taken with a camera no matter how much you fuck with it.

obviously if its very unclear what its of, or has become totally abstract - I think its safe to say its no longer a photo and has become something else.

I totally dont agree about skill on computer over-taking skill with a camera, the two are synonymous. one is just an extension of the other.

Most photographers will know how to use photoshop to make the most of their work. Most commercial photography you see in advertising or editorial has usually been retouched to a greater or lesser extent. Its just part of the process.

there's a big difference between digital art based on photography and actual photography imo.

^ i think that's what i'm trying to get at.

i do very little in the way of retouching my photos as i think it kind of detracts from the original image too much...that and i'm useless with editing programs. but really, you can make a pretty average shot looking fucking amazing if you know how to use photoshop.

having said that, i'm not a professional and could barely consider myself a hobbyist...so i'll get me coat.
