Freestylers [DJ Set] (UK)
Rocking clubs and parties for over a decade now, The Freestylers are still one of the most exciting names in dance music. They’ve had Top 20 chart hits,
headlined big festivals, sold half a million albums, toured the US supporting Lenny Kravitz, and were the first electronic act to play fully live on legendary BBC TV show Top Of The Pops.
Aston Harvey and Matt Cantor were both making different styles of music when they first met in London in the mid-90s. Uber-engineer Aston had been half of
pioneering breakbeat hardcore act Blapps Posse, getting busy with cuts like ‘Buss’ It’ and ‘Don’t Hold Back’ before going on to work with Definition Of
Sound, Rebel MC and DJ Rap. Matt Cantor, meanwhile, was recording with Andy Gardner from the Plump DJs as Cut ‘N’ Paste and Strike for the fledgling
Freskanova label.
General Midi(UK)
Paul Crossman and studio partner Eelz have spent the last few years creating these dynamite futuristic sounds, constantly fine-tuning the tracks while Paul simultaneously toured the world. They first met in 1996 in the office of the Lakota club in Bristol, south-west England. Eelz had just moved to the musical city, while Paul had a studio set-up and was doing a lot of live electronic music. When the club he was co-promoting needed DJs for its second room, Paul thought I can do that and started playing nu skool breaks records by acts like the Bassbin Twins, Adam Freeland and scene pioneer Rennie Pilgrem. It was the start of a love affair with breakbeat.
Eelz and Pauls first project Starecase, producing a melodic progressive house sound. Finding that they sometimes had ideas in the studio that didnt fit that vibe, they started another project more breaks-fuelled - in 1998 and called it General Midi after a standard preset on a keyboard.
Starecases debut album on Hope Recordings at the beginning of the decade saw them grace the cover of DJ magazine, but by the early noughties they both became bored with progressive house and worked out that they preferred to be messin full-time with dirty, kick-ass breakbeat.
DJ Hyper(UK)
Constantly at the cutting edge of dance music since the turn of the millennium, Hyper is a DJ in world-wide demand. From the Far East to Australia, across the breadth of the United States and throughout Europe, his sets are never less than perfect, blending blistering beats and ripping bass with a panache that is the envy of the dance world.
His recent output has seen him forming a kick-ass rock ‘n’ roll band under the Hyper moniker, featuring erstwhile Prodigy member Leeroy, ex-Pitchshifter axe-spanker Jim Davies and The Light and PFNs main-man Ronnie. Their critically acclaimed ‘We Control’ album took them out of the clubs and onto the stages of festivals all over the globe, including Glastonbury, Glade, the Sziget Festival in Hungary and Coliseo Ciudad de Atarfe in Spain. Their second album ‘Suicide Tuesday’ is out September 2008.
Skool Of Thought(UK)
Living between the UK and Australia, Skool Of Thought is the owner and label manager behind the award winning Against The Grain & SuperCharged Music record labels - home to the likes of the Freestylers, Krafty Kuts, Splitloop, Ed Solo and of course Skool Of Thought. He is the guy responsible for the enormous Groove Armada 'Superstylin' and Freestylers v Pendulum 'Painkiller' breaks remixes. He has appeared on the front cover of 3D magazine in Australia, described by IDJ magazine as 'an underrated genius' and recognized by DJ magazine as helping form the 'nu skool breaks' scene. He has produced countless breakbeat monsters over the years including Heavyweight Breaks Volumes 1 & 3, Breakspoll 3, numerous 12" singles and is currently celebrating the success of his debut artist album with Ed Solo entitled 'Random Acts Of Kindness'. To top it all off he has just launched a third label called 'Cool & Deadly' with Tayo. Phew! Time to take a lesson from Skool...
Maelstrom (FRA)
Joan Mael Peneau is not a name many would recognise immediately but his two aliases (Malestrom and Mr. Strom) have both grounded strong reputations in their respective scenes for pushing the boundaries of their genres.
As an electro and broken beat artist, Maelstrom, busted onto the scene in 2007, establishing his party sounds in amidst a competitive French market flooded by Nu Skool, Tear-Out and Hard Style artists. Incredibly, he was able to redefine the Funky and Party Broken Beats genre, with a unique sound that harmonizes with the ever-popular Electro genre pioneered and governed by his countrymen, Daft Punk, Justice and the many Ed Banger artists. The ensuing sounds have been heralded to have “bridge the void between French Electro and Party Breaks”; And Electro and Breakbeat artists, fans and enthusiasts around the world have taken note, supporting him to a nomination at the 2008 International Breakspoll Awards for “Best Breakthrough Producer”.
