well. it looks like you've answered your own q. i'd say it's the soundcard. i know my onboard apple card won't let me process files with VST or Audio Unit plugins.

get a Firewire soundcard

why logic express dude?

save up the xtra cash cash n get logic pro, u'll be happy if u do, as its no doubt the best muisc creation tool :)
