G+
Re: G+
why would anyone need this when EVERYONE is on facebook, even randoms I met overseas and all have added me to facebook... why would I use this limited version of something which is essentially the same thing?
I agree facebook needs some competition, but hey, don't see it being replaced any time soon tbh

Re: G+
Google has put a whole lot of research into how social networks in real life operate, and implemented it as the circles feature - you can see a nice slide show about it here: http://www.slideshare.net/padday/the-re ... network-v2
At the moment there are only(!) 20 million people on there (in less than 3 weeks), so as far as facebook interactions go it's not quite there, but for following people like on twitter it's pretty good. Some high profile tech nerds and pundits are already there and actively posting - Linus Torvalds, Guido Van Rossum (Creator of python), Kevin Rose (Founder of Digg), Ashton Kutcher etc
It also looks like they might be well placed to take a bit of the audience away from sites like linkedin, quora etc.
Its still early days yet, but will be interesting to see how it pans out. I'm waiting to hear on the features they are developing for businesses and what the api should look like. Facebook is pretty abysmal for developing on imo (Poor documentation, constantly changing apis), so it should be good to see what google comes up with here.
Also, facebook's new chat bar sucks major balls. Someone should kill it with fire.

Re: G+
eh, the main point of google+ right now seems to be to make loads of circles ('people i would say hi to but not really much more but i don't mind if they see random bullshit i post', 'people i'd hang out with but are still friends with someone i don't speak to so it's a bit awkward there') and ocd everyone you know into an overlapping collection of 73 circles. tbh i'd rather actually talk to people (where g+ falls flat) than do that.apophenian wrote:Google has put a whole lot of research into how social networks in real life operate, and implemented it as the circles feature - you can see a nice slide show about it here: http://www.slideshare.net/padday/the-re ... network-v2

Re: G+
first off, i'd note that g+ is in beta. a lot of the usability issues are still being ironed out. things have changed quite a bit since it launched ~3 weeks ago.
secondly, the quality of interaction i've had (conversations, etc) far outweigh those that i've seen on twitter (140 char arguably limit or preclude discussion) or facebook (aka the socially acceptable myspace). if anything, it's closer to a more modern version of livejournal.
i'd say give it a go. anything's got to be better than facebook imo.
