New York City is testing a small batch of LED streetlights that redesign not only the light, but the entire lamppost as well. With current bulbs rated for about 24,000 hours, the new LED models, which rate for between 50,000 and 70,000 hours, would be a huge improvement. In addition to lasting longer, the LEDs would also use 25% to 30% less energy and emit no harmful chemicals when discarded.

just out of curiosity...given that sketch city have received funding from the government, does their support for this event in any way jeopardise it?

Re: Street Art

Posted: Tue Sep 16, 2008 1:48 pm
by ghetto kitty
no.
lots of those supporters are completely legit buisnesses, as is sketch city.

this is an event/an exhibition to protest the new laws, aint nothing illegal or dubious about it.

i'm not questioning the legitimacy of their business or the legality of the event, just the conflict of receiving funds from the government whilst protesting against its policies.

i realise that the gov't can't exactly take away their right to protest...but it's just a thought....

we walk a fine line promoting workshops and graff events to the public at ALL,
and when we get funding from a govt body its really re assuring that they understand the reaches of the art form is not just vandalism, which is what they are trying to combat.

dont student bodies, teachers, taxi drivers etc all get some kind of support from govt?
also, i should point out that the laws have been brought in by the state govt, and that there are factions in other areas of govt who do NOT think its the answer.

i dunno, ive got my back up recently about all this.
prolly cause its tricky times, we are trying to help kids see how applying thier art can be a way to create and survive, and ive still got people around me who call me scum for doing so.
(not you babe!, but even my dad had a dig the other day, so many people jsut dont geddit)

I think thats one of the hallmarks of a functioning democracy actually.

would you prefer to live in a society where the government only provides funding to groups that agree with what it says/thinks? how about only granting media rights/licences to media outlets that portray it in a positive light, and revoking these rights/licences if they dont?

starting to sound like some sort of totalitarian regime innit!

I'm sure separation of powers comes in here somewhere so that the gov can put the money aside but then another branch of the exec determines who geets the funds. of course I'm not exactly a constitutional expert, or even really have average IQ, so I'm just guessing.

i was actually thinking more along the lines of if they haven't received the funding there might some repercussions.

agreed that it's totalitarian...but you never know!

Its from a street art exhibition at the Tate Modern in London, and that one was stuck on the outside of the building.

I love the ambiguousness in his pose and the fact he's really holding a camera.

Melbourne City Council also appears to value it highly, recently covering a Banksy stencil in Cocker Alley with perspex to prevent its being vandalised.

yer that is sick the main reason i like it is its a proper guerilla installation - d*face and a friend pretending to be council workers with a crane, then they got chased by police in helicopter. big crime.

quiet an impressive undertaking. coincides with the opening of his exhibition tonight as well. smart man, big do0llars a coming.

_ _ _ _ _ _edit

just went and checked it out...sick exhibition, way better than i could have imagined. 3 rooms of installation stuff then the main gallery space packed with his paintings/montages/sculptures

i counted over 200,000 pounds worth of sold work....someone is getting paid tonight!

Banksy's first official exhibition in New York.....

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/09/arts/ ... ref=slogin

This one is not a mural but an installation: a mock pet supply shop, filled with animatronic creatures like a rhesus monkey and would-be creatures like fish sticks swimming in a tank. The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill, as the green awning reads, is Banksy’s first official exhibition in New York, his representatives say, and it will be open to the public daily through Oct. 31.

love it, as always.

this especially >

“I wanted to make art that questioned our relationship with animals and the ethics and sustainability of factory farming,” Banksy said in a statement distributed by a publicist, “but it ended up as chicken nuggets singing.”

Sadly, there are actually no vocalizing snacks. Banksy’s statements, like much of his pranksterish oeuvre, should be taken with a grain of salt. But there’s no denying the show’s attention to comically pointed detail.

Juxtaposed with the animatronic displays are real pet supplies, packages of luncheon meat and odd foodstuffs, like cans of quail eggs and Hormel pork tidbits. None are for sale; entrance is free, lunch not included. "

big the fuck ups banksy.
