BREAKS COLLABORATION? (now with links to track samples)

Post by Movement »

I'm looking to start a production duo with a view to possibly putting together a live act in future. I've come up with plenty of beats, basslines, hooks and instrumental and vocal parts I'm really happy with but, coming from a conventional (rather than electronic) music background, I don't know a lot about the effects, sounds, and production techniques used in current breaks tracks. "Well put in some hours and learn then you lazy bastard" I hear you say. I could do that sure but I figure two people bouncing ideas off each other will always come up with better results than either could on their own, hence all the successful production duos out there.

My taste in breaks is for funky, dancefloor-oriented stuff (particularly into Finger Lickin') and a lot of the tracks I've been working on have a strong early-to-mid '80s electro flavour (proper electro-breaks, not the house variation that passes for electro these days). You can download short samples of a few of my basic ideas at megaupload:

I'm a big fan of singing, MCing, scratching and a bit of 'real' instrumentation on breaks tracks and I reckon a live show combining these elements with DJing or live sequencing could go down really well in Melbourne if done well. Failing that, to see a few people dancing to a track I've had a hand in producing would be pretty satisfying too.

So, if you can program buildups and breakdowns in your sleep but you're running short on inspiration for tunes, I'd love to hear from you at [email protected].
