That's so plausible I can't believe it!

aye i no bin doon there fo while...hehe..

I am a big Irvine Welsh fan..I really enjoyed Porno and the linkage back to Trainspotting.

I like to read the novels that films have been based on. Solaris (Stanislaw Lem) is a great read, as was the book that A Clockwork Orange was based on (forget who that was by)!

Also a fan or George Orwell (1984, Keep the Aspidistras Flying) and HG Wells wrote some ineresting freaky sci-fi stuff (Island of Dr Moreau) that i enjoyed...

I'd have to second the Alchemist as a good read, as well as another of my all time faves On the Road.

Me to, have almost finished it. Really enjoying it, but will be happy when I finish it, its a real pain carrying around in my bag all day. HUGE.

They are about to start making it into a movie ... with Johnny Deep playing Lin.

i'm reading this book called 'killing hope' by william blum. it's a chronological summary of cia and american military interventions from the second world war up until the the gulf war in 92.

there's the obvious ones like vietnam and central america, and not so obvious ones like the australian gov general dismissing gough whitlam as pm in the 70s.

really good read.

Haven't read The Sentinel, but I've read Arthur C Clarke's "Childhood's End" a few times - it's rad.

Picked up a comic called 1602. Its a Marvel Comics release, taking the Xmen, Fantastic 4, Spiderman and Daredevil and putting them 400 years in the past.

Its not time travel, its set as if they'd always been in 1602. Really nice artwork, intriuging plot.

thought there was another book thread :? anyhoo...

Just finished Thief of Time by Terry Pratchett - Disc World series.

Was hard to get into cos he goes off on tangents, but once i got into it, maaaan oh man, did i love it! LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE :D This guy is a generous in terms of his writing. Each Disc World book stands alone as its own book so you don't have to read them in order, but i am seriously thinking of buying the whole series (think there is about 34 books altogether) and reading from start to finish.

Brilliant stuff, highly recommend, two thumbs up! :D

Currently reading "Critical Mass" by Phillip Ball

Interestingly enough that was the name of my sisters deb ball partner, Phillip Ball that is, not Critical Mass.

"May I present Sally Polson, partnered by Critical Mass, whom I'm sure has some explosive fusion dance moves in store for us later.

Anyheeeeeeeew.....

This book is essentially concerned with a physics of social science, and deals predomoniantly with psychology, philosophy, and physics, and the inherent overlap.

Great book because these three topics are pretty much the things that are my intellectual passions (if I could call them that, I'm certainly not calling me self an intellectual).

Anyone thinking about tackling the book should prob start with CHAOS by James Gleick first, as "Critical Mass" has some great little bits in it that might be missed without a knowledge of historical discovery of "the sensitive dependence upon intial conditions" within all systems - otherwise known as the butterfly effect - (which CHAOS explains with beauty and insight - whilst remaining simple enough for the layman)

i heard that guy being interviewed on hack a while back. they got him to have a debate with some boomers - was pretty funny. :D

finished deadkidsongs that i wrote about earlier. awesome awesome book. highly recommend it. very dark and a bit depressing at points but well worth it.

currently reading 'me talk pretty one day' by david sedaris. i reckon he's my favourite author of late. i read one of his other books last year and i think i'm gonna go out and buy everything else he's ever written after this. love his style. he makes me laugh out loud at least once per page...

underground is great and brave new world is brilliant.

interesting one: "co-opetition" brandenburger and nalebuff
definitely worth reading if youre interested in learning more about business, competition and strategy.

another one "the red queen" about evolution, pretty solid.

There was an article in the Australian too with him and Imre Salinusky (sp?) debating each side of the argument. Imre got my vote.

Those are both excellent books, esp Solaris (seen the 1st version of that movie Killeye?). Burgess is so creative in his language with Clockwork. Amazing.

Have you read The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty?
I reckon that is a good read too, and it came BEFORE the movie.

about to start reading shantaram. want to read it before i go to india.

at the moment i'm readint the songlines by bruce chatwin. it's about how australia was 'sung' into exsitence by the aboriginal ancestors. really interesting insight into an amazing mythology. i got inspired to read it after seeing ten canoes. highly recommended, although it changes course in the middle which really annoyed me.
