Sarcasm IS a low form of wit, I'm sorry people. ANYONE can say something sarcastically and it takes no particualr brains to do it.

I could say "I'm going to the bathroom"

and someone could say

"thanks for letting me know"

That's not smart!

Although, well put sarcasm is quite cutting and can really have some meaning. Bill Hicks did it best.

Paranoid Edge is the MOST sarcastic bastard I've ever met. I don't like sarcasm aimed at me for no reason, and Malx used to LOVE taunting me with it. I don't mind sarcasm being flung at others but when it's aimed at me I wanna kick the person in the head.

But I'm guilty of it too. I try stop myself, but it just slips out... :?

I'm with Mixi on this one. There is a huge difference between sarcasm, and clever irony. A sar-chasm if you will.

Sarcasm is undeniably lowest form of wit, thats why its used so much by 4th graders.

However, it stil can be very funny when used in the right circumstance, I find generally when its delivered in such a way that its clear that the use of sarcasm in itself is deliberatley ironic.

Ok, I'm analysing it too much, but I think you get my drift.

have to completely dissagree with you both on that one... an objective point on the quality of sarcasm as a form of wit cannot be measured, the whole concept is entirely abstact to say the least. It may be your opinion, but to say is is unequivocally a low form of wit is silly. The phrase "Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit" is merely a cliched "catch phrase" passed down from people who personally didn't like sarcasm and could not rebut against it.

true, I will concede you that point. however I was merley exaggerating for effect. If we all 100% qualified all statements we made with sound evidence, and objectivity it's be quite dull yes? And yes, I do realise I'm one of the first people to jump on someone when their statements are not qualified or objective. Hey, most people have double standards, why can't I?

what is this based on? intuitition?

aaaaaaaaaaah see I believe your argument in the latter part suffers from the very constraints of my former arugment. ironic no? as Ollie would say. Kettles. Pots. Black.

shame cos I could go for some metaphysical debate, but I got too much on at work. Lets pick this up at a later date.
